FE35 - 23C Engine rebuild

Location
Cambridge
I have trawled my catalogs today and apart from liners, nothing else is listed. As you probably know this engine was only made from 1964-68 by the standard vanguard co and fitted to leyland 90 two tonner trucks and karrier bantams. When i am stuck i call FW Thorntons 01952 252892

Thanks guys all help greatly appreciated.

It has now been confirmed beyond any doubt that what I have is the OE160 engine.

I even have a parts list for it.

Well if all else fails Westwood will manufacture 4 liners (Not cheap) which just leaves the problem of finding pistons

Hi Mursal no the pistons are welded to the liners unfortunately and are not salvageable.
Plus I will need to beat seven bales **** out of them to move them.
I am beginning to think I will end up just parting it out for spares

Karrier were made here, I don't think there will be any parts left now though.
Your probably right about parts not being available.
If I cannot get pistons then I may find someone with a frost damaged block who would be interested in all the parts.

Spoke to Thorntons and just my luck they sold their last set of pistons earlier this year.
The reason I am having a problem pulling the pistons and liners out a a single unit is that the liners on the OE160 are a press fit liner not a push fit like the 23C (Learn something new every day)

Well short of a miracle this will be the last post on this project as I have exhausted all of my known suppliers and some I had not heard of before and no one has or knows of anyone with a set of pistons. Westwoods want £440 plus VAT for liners alone.
So if anyone know of anyone with an OE160 in any piece of equipment I have an engine in pieces which is available.

Thanks Netherfield
I have managed to buy a complete 23C engine (Not seized but breathing very heavy LOL)

I think I read somewhere that you can in fact put the crankshaft, main bearing housings and conrods into the 23c engine thus increasing the capacity.

Has anyone else heard of this conversion

A simple way to check if you have the 23C engine or the EO160 is to check the engine to transmission bolts below the starter motor. On the 23C there are 3 bolts but on the EO160 there are only 2 . If you look closely at the first picture you will see there is not a bolt hole just below the starter.

Tthis is a better image. It might be possible to drill the mounting holes in the block

I know I said my previous post would be the last but I could not resist posting a photo of the pistons with the remains of the liners from numbers 2 & 3 cylinders

Those are press fit liners yet no amount of pounding would get the pistons to shift without the liners coming with them.

Hi John
Yes I split the liners and got them off. Unfortunately pistons are scrap after all the beating on the small end castings.
Pistons are no longer available for the EO160 and I have tried just about every supplier in the UK.
Plus bolt holes in the block do not line up with the transmission case
I am just bloody minded and did not want the pistons to beat me.

I have bought another 23C engine to rebuild for my Grey/Gold

I have a 23c being rebuilt as well but someone has had the head off and destroyed the combustion bits in the head so looking for new plugs or headView attachment 849689
I would just clean that up a bit, take the sharp edges off. Its a bodge attempt in opening up the throats, which needs doing to get the things to start, should have no effect on engine otherwise. Do make sure you have the right head gasket, one which seals on the liner tops, there are some out there which dont and allow compression to pass between liner and block, very heavy breathing is a sign if this.
