Feeding rolled rye to beef finishers

Any one fed rye grain as a barley substitute? We home feed barley in a tmr ration but after 2 dry springs and very low yields we have 30 acres of sharp ground that we are looking for alternatives to substitute about 20 % of our total barley use. Have some rye in some stewardship wild bird food on the same ground and it looks fantastic!

No problem at all . It will feed very similar to wheat but a lower protein. 20% will improve the ration

No idea on feeding either, but is triticale another option worth looking at?

No idea on feeding either but when I see the amount of rye that is grown for the bio digesters round the coast it must have a fairly high feed value..

Isn’t rye grown for silage but for digesters, rather than combining?

I did some trial work done by a local seed company a couple of years back, showing it wasn’t anywhere as good as cereal wholecrop silage for AD, but it still seems popular for that. High yielding silage crop I guess?

Not sure what the reason is but it is the go to crop up here for the AD plants. Could be that they get multiple cuts as against one for cereals.

that is hybrid rye, it's different to ordinary rye. But gives huge bulk as well.

just the one, we grow it for silage, up to 18/20 tonnes acre.

cut it earlier last year, analysed out as good av silage, this year left it for whole crop, will post analysis when in ! It came in this year, at 18 ton/acre.

I'm in a similar situation iv got thirty acres due to go into barley but last time it was in it yielded less than this year's barley (Yes that bad). It yields wheat well and currently has a decent crop of spring oats in It.
I'm putting it into triticale instead in the hope I get decent cattle feed and a decent yeild. Time will tell but I'm hopefull. I haven't looked into rye, it's maybe an idea for the future.

Why would you not follow spring Oats with wheat?

Normally I would but it's to sort my rotation out. The oats were put in instead of a winter crop. Iv got some farm saved ww to go on a field with a blackgraas problem that would have had the triticale. so I want this trit seed to go on a field with no problems so I can save some for next season (I like to get two years out of bought seed) declared of course.
