Fendt 1050 / Quadtrac

I would have thought that if u can afford such a large tractor your not going to be too worried about the diesel it will use. It’s kinda like buying a Ferrari and only taking it out on Sundays. Is there a very limited market for tracked tractors and very high hp tractors or what is the normal work life of such a machine in terms of hours or years?

I would have thought if you were buying tractors like that you would be acutely aware & conscious of the amount of fuel they would use & even a small percentage improvement would add up to a lot of $$$ over its working life . . .

Farmer Roy it would not be on my radar.....if I were in a position to afford such a machine! We’re all different I guess.

Just on the subject of fuel . . .
This is what my 300hp tractor is using planting chickpeas with a 12 metre planter

1.8 litres per hectare

The word you are looking for is justify rather than afford.

A Ferrari is a discretionary purchase, with no expectation of it earning money or even justifying its existence, apart from wanting one & being able to access the necessary $$$$
A big tractor is a hard nosed business decision, a tool to do a very specific job with the intention of it earning you money, that is costed out very carefully . . ,
Certainly not "recreational" . . .

At least, it should be . . .

I dunno Roy, hauling a 14 tonne grain trailer with a Fendt 1050 strikes me as being discretionary or even 'recreational' as well.

Haha - I tend to agree with you there :)

Don't get me wrong: If I had to get a trailer load of corn to next door or the mill or to store or whatever, I would do it if nothing else was available, but I do not agree with the: 'I bought this tractor so need to use it everyday' philosophy. Every hour on that clock is another depreciation token collected, irrespective of how you spent it.

No, I would not hesitate to park big tractors up in a shed and connect up the CTEK if no real work for them was due- farmers are more than happy to do it with combines, choppers and self propelled sprayers for months at a time, I see no difference in parking up a Fendt 939 or 1050 or Xerion up. Get a second hand Case Puma or something for the donkey work and to cover with hedgetrimmer gunk 3 months of the year, doesn't have to be a 20 year old dog with a breezeblock for a seat!

Well, if we're seriously worried by costs, we'd be drilling with a Ford 7600 and Massey 30 drill, wouldn't we ?

I have no doubt big machinery can pay in the right circumstances, after all, it depends on how you value the time of employees. Bigger farms where a lot more labour is not of the family sort can rack up some pretty scary bills in short order, I'd sooner spend a bit more of that on some metal because you get some money back when you trade that on.Labour or wage inflation is only ever one-way and once you have spent it, it's gone.

That's pretty much what happens here & in North America . . .

Ajd132 u certainly jump to conclusions. Ur entitled to but your not going to be right all the time, thankfully for me. Farmer Roy I understand your viewpoint of pricing things and making hard nosed business decisions and all that but some of us don’t do any of that but we still farm and have fun doing it and that’s why I say if a guy can afford/justify whatever then use it and enjoy it as life is short and it’s for living and having fun. That’s just my view and I know we are all different and thank goodness for that. With the wet weather we are having now a quadratic is probable the only thing that could move on my farm today.

Fair enough
I just can't get my head around tractors being "fun" though :)
To me they are just a necessary evil, a tool to do a job, that's all

This reminds me of Case dealers making claims in the late '80s that their big Magnums could replace the aging Ford FW30s that were all around here.

They couldn't!!
