Food supply strong... Really.?

So been looking into what the government keeps saying about our food supply and it doesn't add up from my perspective.
When you look at the shelves you see all these exotic locations. Will they keep these supplies going?

Uk Grain reserve information for last year didn't show a great amount and following the damp autumn I bet this didn't get any better. Did anyone get a good main potato crop out of the ground?

Should we be digging for victory?

Discuss....

Stopped in the chain store in town while dropping off eldest son at school. I asked him to see if there was any loo roll, to which he replied "Archie works here after school, he says the distribution centre didn't dispatch it's orders yesterday because they're short staffed. They only got their fresh veg order"... ?
Apart from the chemist, newsagents and butcher it's the one shop for a 6 mile radius, and the 2 other shops (one 6 miles, the other 10) are the same chain.

Find a small independent bet they have everything as normal , the big boys are creating panic to get folk to spend imo .

Absolutely we should! But maybe not quite yet.

The £ is crapping itself.
The Stock Market is crashing. Anything other than Physical stocks is toast.
The Government is spending 100's of Billions, which will have to be paid for.
A good way to do this is the reduce the balance of payments.

EU Brexit negotiations will be on hold.
ELMS will almost certainly be put on hold, possibly abandoned altogether.

The government will soon intervein as to getting farmers to produce as much as we can as to what will be needed.
Even if we did get 70% of the winter crops in the ground, half of them will be crap!

Cereal crop values are already on the way up.
I am now reviewing plans to not replant failed OSR crops.

Big carrot grower near Goole just been saying the demand for veg is higher than christmas and is recruting more pack house staff ,,,Is it now the time for supermarkets to stop being so fussy about the size, shapes and colours of the veg and just take everything ,,it would stop the mountains of waste that end up ploughed in or sent to AD plants

Just listened on radio 4 to Brexit Central Tim whatever his name is publican. Couple of things he said struck me. First he was lobbying for support for pub trade which made sense. And then as interview came to a close interviewer asked the following question. He was asked if Brexit should be suspended (not stopped) but suspended. His reply. Non leave EU December 31st as it would allow UK to remove tariffs and import more cheaply.

So there you go. World continues. And the head publican is looking at the bigger picture!!!!

I heard the same thing.
It was Tim Martin, boss of Wetherspoons and well known staunch Brexiter.
A classic Mandy Rice-Davis situation of “He would say that, wouldn’t he!”

The main interview was not Brexit related but talked of immediate short term support for the pub/restaurant industry.
The Brexit question was tacked on right at the end of the interview and was not a will Brexit happen by the end of the year, but should it happen. Tim’s answer was that it should in a “it will save this Country a lot of money in further EU contributions” way.

Surely carrots would be mostly gone at this time of the year anyway?

Nope - harvesting crop over wintered under straw. 12 months UK supply these days. Several years ago there would be a gap in late Spring when came in from Bordeaux area. But now with staggered varieties, under straw overwintering and also geographic location - so northern Scotland for lates.

Farmers have been the bad guys in the room for the last 20+ years.
Attacked from all directions, government, vegans, environmentalists, general public.

Profits have been knocked to the floor, were drowning in regulation and paperwork and now people expect us to up production to feed the nation.??‍♂️

I hope farmers aren't falling for this with their usual we must feed the world mentality, and sign some good supply contracts which are in their favour not the supermarkets.
Maybe even farmers could be price setters for a change and heaven forbid they might even stand together.

If they want sustainable home production they had better come to the table and ask nicely, not stand at the door and try hit us with a big stick like their used to doing.

Yep, I know. But for those on hear who are looking forward to support for home production as a result of this disaster Brexity Timmy did not lend much support, I thought. Thought I would just tease on this thread as Brexit and likley impact on UK agriculture seems to have disappeared in past few days - not sure why.

Cheers. keep safe.

The UK stock market is quite resilient, it is obliged to be so from experience. So far there has not been that much of a fall IMO. 15% isn't that much it is less than we ordinary peeps accept when paying VAT. Yes the independants are probably better at this than the big chains. Good on them too! Now is the time for the farming community to act as one. See the thread on milk prices at the farm gate being slashed being one. Tough it out and say NO, absolutely NO to being bullied.

Don't compromise on quality which IMO is paramount. This is also an opportunity to grow with less chem input. Grow less in the same area with a 75% drop in chem application would be great and be paid more. I truely live in hope (y)

one of the problems this week will be food destined for the pub trade will need to be diverted to the supermarkets
which will take a few days
fore example all those working from home eat lunch at home instead of the coffee shop
like wise our regular butcher is run of their feet but can get in more from the whole salers who would normally supply the pub trade
supermarkets will be accessing these suppliers next week
people Who panic buy must have more money than sense
in 3 weeks time the supermarket will be discounting as they will be full of stock

Surely this will all have to be repackaged as catering supplies are very different to domestic. No doubt what’s going through the chain now will be packed for supermarkets.
