Hard facing wearing metal

Thinking of hard facing some wearing part is it worth? Would be using arch welder 600/680 rods or any other suggestions thanks

It can be well worth it, depends on the wear you're seeing based on the existing metal type and the type of wear it encounters in your soil. Get the wrong match and you're throwing money away, get it right and it works out. Some pics, or a description might find somebody who has done similar and worked out the details.

I have found the 600-680 hardness can mean little, its the rod quality? and whats the metal they leave and some rods can be very sticky but give a very clean run that is more important, I soon found out putting plenty on wasn't a good idea as with high impact it broke off like glass so built up large loses with mild or something like a 250 then hard face. Digger bucket side edges if caught in time could be made to last several times longer before having to replace the bottom edge wear plate, but if left to long it was a waist of time so stronger, quicker and cheaper to cut out and weld in new.

A mate struggled with the h f rods sticking.
Then bought hard face wire for mig much easier.
Repairing a knife edge, stone cropper.

I build up wearing parts regularly, problem being the cost of the rods/wire/consumables now c/w time is making it almost non-viable compared with new replacement.
Expensive Forestry Mulcher Rotors, Forestry grabs, Quarry Excavator Rock buckets, subsoiler legs etc continue to get treatment, plough & cultivator wearing parts less so

You are lucky or running a big bit of kit, on heavy clay we rarely got more than 8 acres to a point and a mole blade in dry conditions when its the only time you should be doing it on average was 10 acres to a end and at worst was 3, a bullet lasted between 20-30 acres with a ceramic expander doing 150 if lucky.

That reminds me of during the war we had a American air base edge of the farm, and like many families seem to adopt a air crew, several came from a farming background and used to enjoy helping with the harvest as were well fed and watered with home brew. one lad Stanley was always telling father they had bigger cows, horses and tractors with huge mangles with heavier crops, by this time father was a getting a bit fed up with this especially with the weather being bad, grand father and dad had taken down an old timber building and had a fire and some days later my father and Stanley had just gone through a gateway where the fire had been, father picked up one of the old hand made huge nails from the debris and said to Stanley we did have decent horses and this is what we used to shoe them with, Stanley took it and had a good look and said well I never thats just like we used to shoe our ponies with.

There's an old one where a texan rancher was on holiday in England an got talking to a farmer, he asks the English chap how many head of cattle does he run the chap replied 100, christ replied the texan that's small fry I run 10,000 head!, How many sheep do you run? i know of farmers that wouldnt bother with points as they wear too quick

For the money and ease of use I have found Superon SuperHard welding rods to be very good. No one has complained at anything I’ve hardfaced using them. They are Indian made but I rate them.

We some very abrasive flinty sand , and run kv knock on points ,and have welded a tungten tile strip on them ,and had land sides out of 500 hardox ,and also put a thin strip at 90 degrees ,bit like a small skid on inside edge of land side ,
speed makes a difference never go over 4.5 mph ,as any faster just burns metal away ,
have hard faced some point too , but hard facing behind the tungsten strip works best , they a bit numb and blunt if hard ,

You have ideal conditions for it to work then. As David Bliss says, it gets harder to improve when the rocks start impacting and breaking it off. Sorry, I can't help with what to use or what pattern though.

used to use leaf springs. they would be getting a bit scarcer now.
