The buttons are stuck in on my pto shaft what are the causes and solutions please?

Rust sticking in the spring and stop it popping out.
Squirty oil in the hole in the other end and tap it in and out lots.

This was first thing I tried no joy unfortunately. It's jammed solid

if the button isn't in a blind hole (some are) get an old welding rod in the hole and tap the button out.

Tried this also. The rod just bent. It's jammed solid somehow

causes are leaving it lolled on grass and rusting up and no lube
pull shZft and leave in tub diesel for as long as you have then good punch in hole and knock it back then other way . or get that little cap off and undo clip and hammer out pin and springs clean ole out and put new uns in
or perseverance back and forth it free and then when not using plenty lube and if it has to live out make it a little house out of a spray can to keep wet off it

Replace entire pin or entire pto yoke or entire half of pto or entire pto.
Something else will usually fit.

Pins available on sparex etc , malpas online.

Can you remove the PTO stub from tractor?

When it's happened to me I've taken it out and got it in vice to batter it off.

One cause is the shaft is too long and it is bottoming out hammering the pin in to place

WD40 and a vice grip, rotate it, don't pull it until it free's off a bit.

I will bet it’s the pto tube that is binding in itself. No one ever puts enough grease on the tube
They bind together and put excessive force on locking pin when turning

Solution is buy a new one and a shed to keep it in.

They bind together and put excessive force on locking pin when turning

All pto shafts should have a grease nipple on the tubes

You say "buttons" are stuck in. Two buttons usually means a power hungry implement like a power harrow. The coupling should slide off if the buttons are in so as @Dave W it's the shaft that's stuck.
If it's not on the tractor stick it in diesel for a day then try working the buttons turning with vice grips first to get them on the move. Some of the buttons are held in with a circlip if that's your type dismantle and give it a proper clean out.
Sometimes hitting (tapping) the button further in helps loosen along with copious release spray.

Awful advice. You risk either damaging back end of tractor or gearbox on machine
