Heptavac & rain

I need to 2nd dose a group of shearlings by next weekend, but every time I’ve tried to do it, it’s hammered it down 🤬

Today was meant to be dry but it’s currently torrential rain. Do I do them when they’re wet? Can’t keep them in unfortunately. Not sure if it’s best to do it in the time frame and risk abscesses or leave it a few days past the 6 week point and try to get them dry-ish…

I never give thought about it raining in older sheep, wouldn’t do young lambs that are going for killing though. More important to get it done well before the Tup’s go in I would think.

My father told me, "If you wait for everything to be perfect, you'll never get anything done".
I think you've done your best to get things perfect but ultimately, you have to crack on and do the best you can.
I've done them wet before and didn't notice any issues but I did change the needle very regularly to minimise any issues.

Thanks. Been dry with bit of a breeze here for 6 hours so I’m going to try and do them today. The rest of the week is a write off weather wise.

I’ve got some spare sterimatic tops here and found a place with enough heptavac for my shearlings and the pre lambing dose for everyone too. Tups have been in for a month now. It’s not ideal but they lapsed on their annual booster which was due in June, and then didnt realise I needed to leave a good few weeks between abortion and clostridial vaccine, hence doing it now.

Years ago, I got rained off by a thunderstorm, halfway through doing Ovivac P on 400 lambs in June. I wasn’t marking the lambs as I injected them, I rarely do.
After it passed, I carried on doing the wet lambs, rather than mix them up and have to do the lot again.

I have never seen as many abscesses on lambs in my life, and have never vaccinated wet sheep since.

A sterimatic won’t help (if the hateful thing ever does) as the needle will still be going through dirty, wet skin each time. The problem won’t be coming from the previous sheep vaccinated.
