Sooooo got a gate post that’s completely rotted off at the ground….. how can I get the butt that’s in the ground so I can just knock a slightly wider one back in without having to dig it all out……??

dug out an old post years ago, got down deep enough to get a chain around it, clearing the last bit of soil with my hand, and put it in a nest of slow worms. Very nearly shat myself.

Trouble is 6 inch down you will probably have solid timber
It will depend if the post is concreted in if not boring a large hole down the middle with a long auger bit then try driving your new post through the middle

Have you got tiny feet or is that post over 12" diameter?

Put new post 2 feet away and install longer gate?

Knock two stakes in next to the broken post then lean gate and post upto the stakes and use the farmers best friend used bale string tie up well and it will see us all out

I surprised myself by getting this to work….

18’ chisel hammered into post, old pair of mole grips fixed to chisel, shackle and chain to mole grips 9 need to drill hole in mole grips for shackle) and then VERY gently pull up with front end loader - need to try and pull absolutely vertically to minimise friction of post and soil. Did take quite a few goes but managed it in the end.

I just looked on YouTube loads of successful ideas how to get it out.
I just typed in
How to get an old post out of the ground.

Dig it out and buy a new hole.
Pete and Kev have a load that didn't sell. Maybe get a good discount.

Just put it in next to the post. Gate will be slightly off straight but won't matter.
Or, like in the old days start digging then compact it in with stones
