When we were kids I remember going to the village fireworks party and dad was going up and down the field in the distance sowing winter barley as the sale had only just gone through was a ok crop but full of sterile brome I rememberHi guys never planted winter barley this late before will it be ok or am I wasting my time should I just put oats in instead
Was the brome in the seed? Normally drilling late is helpful with brome. When we were kids I remember going to the village fireworks party and dad was going up and down the field in the distance sowing winter barley as the sale had only just gone through was a ok crop but full of sterile brome I remember
Not arable here, but I heard "wheat into mud, barley into dust", no?Hi guys never planted winter barley this late before will it be ok or am I wasting my time should I just put oats in instead
hence my suggestion of 18th September....Assuming it goes into a decent seedbed, barley will be OK, likely to be more straw with Nov drilling. Put it into wet mud and compaction it won't be any good at all, barley doesn't forgive a bad start.
Hope this is true but in reality I think I will be righting a lot of my winter wheat offNot arable here, but I heard "wheat into mud, barley into dust", no?
Mud maybe, swamp noHope this is true but in reality I think I will be righting a lot of my winter wheat off
How late is too late for winter barley
Good for you, in the South West too I notice.I've got 20ac to drill. Might go tomorrow, everything is ploughed. Light loamy land.
