I have had good experiences with screw in connectors. You turn a collar over the hose and screw in a pipe thingy. I figured they where temporary but you know the deal, nothong is quite as permenent as a temorary fix that works.

I made up "temporary" front end loader hoses using reusable hydraulic fittings in 2007. Meant I could swap loaders between two tractors

The man who bought the tractor from me has just traded it in.... Still used daily with the "temporary" hoses that I made. Fifteen years not bad for reusable ends that elf and surety want banned!

Had more crimped ends fail more often than reusable ones over the years

Same here. The problem with reusable ends is people fitting them to buggered hoses then complaining they don't last and incorrect fitting/fitting 2 wire ferrules to 1 wire hose etc.

I always tell people that if you ever saw a hose and the wire frays at all.... forget about attempting to join it as it's time that hose was in the bin.
Hydraulic hoses have a best before and they're not kidding.

It will surprise you how much stock you need to cover all basis (especially if you have any Scandinavian kit) but hose crimpers are still a great thing to have in the workshop arsenal. I have and would recommend the finn power as mentioned earlier but you still wouldn't be throwing it over your shoulder and shimming up a piece of kit.

Always found the trick ti reusable ends was to screw the outer on half way, then screw in the inner til threads catch, then finish screwing on outer.

Crimped ends depend on how good the operator is.

In the eighties we had a new firm advertising in the local paper, only three miles away, at the time we had three David Brown loaders in use and cleverly for once all the pipes were identical, so I had ten spare pipes made by said firm.

As it happened we never needed one for a couple of years, fitted a new pipe and it lasted less than a month, swapped it for another and same again, it was the fifth one that finally held together.

By now this firm had gone out of business(what a surprise).

A mate who worked at Brook Motors put me on to another chap who worked there, but was starting up his own business working out of his cellar, I called to see him and he explained the probable cause of the failures as not reading the charts and settings properly and that the other firm had been over crimping the fittings, never had a problem with any made by this chap.

Got a Hydralock one here, works well, use it half dozen times a year. Keep quite a few fittings on the shelf. Cost about £600 when we bought it, quite a few years ago

Had a crimper for several years,best tip I had was to crimp using a slightly loose fitting Allen key as a mandrel to find the point of insert collapse.Never had a failure and so much quicker than repeatedly measuring.
