Any1 done this or anything else to right lambs with Gid.....? Had 10-15 go down with it & it's going to be a while before they're fit to go to slaughter..... They're fine atm but not right if u know wat I mean. Vets confirmed it Friday. We worm our dogs frequently but guessing it's come from foxes 😡 we've had outbreaks in the past........

The senior partner at our vet practice removes the cyst with a drill bit and tweezers. I’ve only ever seen him do it once, but it certainly worked.

I don’t think there is any wormer you can give though. The only drug that kills that tapeworm is praziquantel (which is why you have to use Drontal for dogs, not just Panacur).
There used to be a sheep wormer called Levitape that contained it, but not been available for several years now. Even when it was, I think you’d have to target the worm before the larvae started burrowing through the body to create it’s cysts in the head and elsewhere.

It was years ago, but a medical drama showed hydatid in a human patient. Gripping episode, that! Wish I could remember the title.
I had it when I was two. Three cysts, one in my right lung, one in my liver and one in between. Birmingham hospital for two months, scar from my right armpit to my bellybutton because they opened up like opening a book to get everything in one go. Said it might stunt my growth but I'm 6'3 and closer to 18 stone than 15

It sounds like it's a damned good job they did stunt your growth! :censored:

The old man made a punch on his lathe years ago for removing gid. Still have it here in the odd and sods pot.

Not sure how they knew exactly where to punch the hole but I guess if an animal is circling then you have some indication due to their behaviour?

IIRC you can tap the skull and listen for the hollow spot, or so the vet told me. He found the spot to drill by tapping at it anyway, and pulled a cyst bladder out through the hole.

A standard 12mm punch will do, in the soft circular hollow between the ear and eye.
Get a solid pipe and put over like a stethoscope and you should be able to hear it moving.
Then, Have the animal firmly against a solid surface, put punch in the “dip” and tap with a hammer with fair force, it kills the worm apparently 🤷🏻‍♂️ Always been told to do both sides unless you can feel/hear it moving on 1 side. Had ewes 3 weeks off lambing go down with it and they’ve lambed and reared the lambs, had others have gid and what looked liked listeria the same time, no hope for those ones…

All hypothetical of course 👍🏻

I’ve only ever heard of taking them out from a spot in the middle of the forehead, which was where my vet did my ewe. He did say they could be anywhere though, and getting one out didn’t mean there weren’t more. Advice was to get her fit and cull at weaning just in case. I kept her for a couple more years though, just to see, and she was fine, going as a fit barren cull eventually.

He also said that, if the cyst membrane tore as they were removing it, there was a good chance it would recur.

Most I’ve seen have been dead within 48 hours, they say that it’s mainly sheep under 24 months old get it but I’ve seen it more in 4-5 year olds than younger stock
