International 74 series spec

I am planning a move back to the IH 74 series, hoping that it will take me back to the blissful youth I recall feeling in the cab of my old 674... one basic question I have is - are the chassis of the 474, 475, 574 and 674 all the same size, with interchangeable parts (engines aside)? I understand that the 474 has a 3.4l Neuss engine, the 475 a 3.5l perkins and the 574 and 674 share the same 3.9l Neuss, but with injector mods to feed the 674's higher power. Second question - if the chassis are all the same size, which one weighs in lightest? Tractordata has them from 2562kg for the 674 to 2655kg for the (smaller??) 474, with a weird 2336kg stated for the 574! Third question - I know these were never made without a cab, but has anyone gone topless with theirs?? I have tried to imagine how they would look with the top of the cab off, but the platform and fenders left behind just don't look "right" to me! I wonder if fenders from a different series (or make? I'm no purist!) could be grafted on to give it the sex appeal it deserves?! Thanks!!

As a youth my job was to drive these tractors and mostly 574, in summer the first thing I did was to remove the doors and often wished I could remove the screen too.
One day the screen actually fell out, I very quickly got it put back in. You would be amazed just how much noise the screen keeps out even with the doors off. They would be unbearable without cab in my opinion.
I believe they were offered as an option without cabs in Holland where they were referred to as "open station".

I suggest you join the IH group on Facebook. Lots of pictures on there and also knowledgeable people that could answer your questions.

My all time favoutite, 674, small and diminutive with the heart of a lion, turn on a sixpence (5p size today:ROFLMAO:)
Put a lemken 4fr rev on it, ok
I beleive some have swept back axles in the series
As regard fenders, Ive seen pics with cab off, standard and round ones on the smaller models. Standards best
How about strip the cab and leave the frame, that looks better than without

The only draw back was mine was without TA, so 16mph flat out, Took a bit longer to travel to fields 10mls away, BUT loved that tractor
Only two thinks holding me back on getting one
No 1, Wife
No 2, Coastal rust, its a bugger

TA had nothing to do with top speed, there was 3 options on the gear box build,
Slow, it had more in the field range of gears,
Medium, was I bit quicker, but still had plenty of gears for work,
Fast, if you can call it that, did about 20mph depending on tyres,
The TA splits down from standard box, not up

IIRC, there is a combination of factory gearbox parts that can be assembled to make them go like a whippet.

Well thats me educated,
They sold so many then, that they came out of stock held by the dealer and his orders
Secondhand S reg from a ring fenced farm, top speed 15.8mph if I can recall back 32 years, on 12 x 36s

13.6 x 36 and everyone tells me the 674 should have 38's but mine hasn't.
Neither has mine but I think it probably did when it was new. I believe they were quite a bit more money than the 574 and I suppose putting bigger back wheels on makes it look like you’re getting a bigger tractor.

Yes that could be possible,

I'm not sure how it works, but the gearbox combination is on the serial plate, but I know there is different speeds
I think there were 2 speed transmission ratio options and 2 diff ratios, giving 4 different transmissions.
I have a 574 operator’s manual somewhere which explains the codes on the serial No plate.

Yes the 4 cyl ones are the same size. Those weights make no sense to me.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I’ll be after whatever is available when I’m looking if they’re all the same size, though I do fancy the Perkins 475…. I have seen photos of these and the front grille is “upside down” in some photos (lights in the top half) and the same as the 74’s in others, with lights nearer the bottom. Any ideas why the difference, was it designed that way or did someone put it in the wrong way up before their farmers guardian photoshoot?!
Regarding cab on/off, I am half deaf already so noise shouldn’t be an issue for me…!

I think the idea was more power needed a bigger tyre , 454 was on 32 inch rims, 574 on 13.6 36 or 16.9 30(?), 674 was 16.9 34 or 13.6 38

If you want to go cabless, an earlier safety cab version would probably be easier to strip down. And you won't have all the foam padding to worry about getting wet.
