Is this normal

We purchased a late 2008 Manitou 627t last August. Its doing all that is asked of it. Previous owner had the spool block replaced about a year ago, which is a common fault on these. Can anyone here tell me if its normal for the engine to be put under load whilst lowering the boom. It really brings the revs down.
Also, can the 20" wheels be changed out for 24,s without causing any harm.
Thanks in advance for any help

The boom lowering will pull on the engine as its most likely got a locking valve in it for when the hydraulic hose bursts the boom won’t come crashing down. Pressure to lift and lower. Changing the wheels would only cause harm if they rub on anything while turning. you will gain traction with greater diameter wheels and more top end speed. I’d stick with the originals thou. Designed for that size fir a reason.

i’d say it’s more common for the 627 to be on 24” wheels rather than 20” ones that are listed as standard.
Should be fine changing them. Looks a completely different and more able machine on the bigger tyres.

Hello

Yes spools are common to crack when you abuse the self leveling ram on this model.

Its not normal to have a delay on the lowering/labour engine, if its a standard check valve on the ram you can adjust the speed it reacts, 10mm spanner and a 13mm spanner required. Undo the locking nut and screw out the adjuster bolt 1 maybe 2 turns then try it, fine turn it half a turn at a time after that. ONLY adjust this with hot oil it is normal to have a very slight delay with cold oil. IF you adjust it so its reacting too fast then under certain conditions while lowering from height the ram will judder and shake the whole machine, if this happens screw adjuster back in slightly till it stops.

IF you have boom suspension then best to replace the whole suspension valve, been loads of part number changes on these suspension valves over the years and earlier ones like yours were replaced for exactly your problem. at one time there was a updated screw in valve you could buy for the old ones instead but thats no longer available and even if it was there quite old now so better to replace the whole suspension valve and be done with it.

Check bottom lift ram bushes while your at it, MLT 627 likes to eat them bushes and bugger the ram eye.

I can supply you parts if your UK

Yes nothing stopping you changing to 24" wheels BUT you will need new front mud guard brackets or extend the ones you have, and you will need a new right hand headlight mounting arm too. I think the rear is fine and uses the same engine side pods and mud guard brackets for both wheel options.

You will gain ground clearance and top speed. it will be even more critical you use 2nd gear for field work or pushing. You will overheat transmission easier trying to stick in 3rd all the time.
These 4 speed manuals have always lacked speed ratios, really wanted a gear between 2nd and 3rd.

Had that with a 2001 629T. It was an hydraulic issue with the block from memory.

I get the impression that there isn't a telehandler (or probably any loader with hydraulic self levelling) that doesn't suffer in some way from repeated dead ending the crowd/dump when lowering/lifting.

Nope, some are better than others but i dont know of any make or model that doesnt have at least the odd issue with self leveling system. Some issues are cheap others are really expensive, like the MLT 627, 5 bank spool block is about £2.5k plus vat or more each time someone cracks it internally. i give people the option of going to 4 bank and doing away with the PUH which saves quite a lot. lot of people dont really use the PUH anyway so no great loss.

The check valve you mean is the one on the side of the boom?

Quite a few bits of equipment are restricted on lower. The reason is pump supply can't keep up with demand so there is a delay, if over restricted its being forced down. I would say if adjustable do so with its normal load on when hot and see how it works. Reach rams often have a loose restricter held in by the hose fitting, they get lost sometimes and after a seal repair people cant understand why the arm pauses and then moves often coming in. Simple

Thanks for that. Where is the check valve located?
