JD 1365 swivel gearbox

Think we have issues in ours, haven’t pulled it apart yet but drive is going in and not coming out.
Anyone else had to do surgery, are parts available or is a new box the only option? If so rough cost for new please?

Bound to get parts for that box can only be a couple of bevel gears in it and shafts and bearings unlikely to be made by john Deere either probably comet or some other maker. Was there a Big Bang or is there now a noise from it? Drain the oil and see what comes out you may be very very lucky and something moved or a key sheared on a gear

When ares went bang the parts where only going to cost £110 less than the gearboxes so we had the boxes could of got parts cheaper elsewhere but needed the mower going.

Just lost drive he said, was running hot the day before but no noise, we changed the oil yesterday before starting, was no fillings visible..... then an hour into use it lost drive, just spun it by hand today and it’s sounding rough.....

Oil level is separate in the top and bottom half , a level for both.
the seal between the two used to go and the oil from the top box would run into the lower box And it would leak out the breather then the top box would run dry .

Well to completely loose drive it’s probably done one of three things. Worst case it’s stripped some teeth or sheared a shaft or just sheared a key way (assuming Kuhn use a keyway samme as most others)

Check that the piece connecting the 2 boxes isn't cracked and putting everything out of alignment, I can remember replacing it along with the shaft that runs inside it. Used to be in those boxes 3 or 4 times a year.

What was the advantage of these swivel gearboxes over the linkage or drawbar set up on these mowers? I have a 1360 with on the 3 point linkage and when set up correctly I cant see what the gain in swivel gearbox is? My 1360 is 1997, original Waltersheild shaft still on it, never knocks or have any issues with it. Most of the local 1365 swivel gearbox machines locally have run into trouble and some stage.

We’ve got a ‘95 1350 On linkage and a couple of years ago sheared the main hex drive section after the pto. Welded it together with a bit of lemon over it while waiting for a new shaft but it’s been fine ever since. Replacing with jd bits was going to be mega money so bought a bit of en16t shaft off the stockholders.

Tighter turns and being easier to swap between tractors were the advantages, reliability and an increase in the power requirement were the big disadvantages. The new type swivel head is meant to be more reliable but i don't know anyone with one who's putting thousands of acres a year through it

The Hex shaft was a funny arrangement as there was only one detent for the lock pin on the Shaft . If you had the shaft off to grease it and put it on wrong and didn’t notice the pin hadn’t latched it could slide off the mower end at full speed.

Around 1996 Deere changed from a drawbar to lift arm set up. A number of the lift arm machines started to vibrate at the mid gearbox and eventually shake to the point of failure. There was a recall done on the Irish machines and the complete drawbar was swapped out for the older towed design. Local dealer had a selection of taken off drawbar beams sat in the yard for a couple of years after. The lift arm set up also had a frame which could be attached to the top link. Think our one is still under the work bench.
Deere later adopted the Kuhn swivel/gyro hitch design

Pretty sure they are walterscheid gearboxes, although the comer ones look similar

Had a look on JD parts, just a crown wheel pinion set for one section,upper or lower was about £1800. Personally, if you can wait a few months to fix I would try and match up for size and try GBgearboxes for a price,in Italy though
