How did they do.
Well they stood nicely, but were reasonably late in. And then had 3" of rain in 2 weeks after which didn't help 🤦‍♂️
Did better where I upped the seed rate from a (quite conservative) low start on the field 🤐
But yield wise, very disappointing 😔 definitely not a good year for peas.

I can't say it was due to the variety either. Next door had 70acres of peas, drilled 2 weeks after us. They left 3 trailers in the field and the tractor drivers buggered off, 2 fair sized combines going at it too 🙈. Cleared them up in a short afternoon 🤐

Manager are a widely grown white pea and used often in arable silage mixes because if their standing ability . Perhaps a bit behind in yield but in reality it’s the spring / summer weather and pre-planning that make the yield on peas, not the variety. Peas don’t like wet and compaction, they want free draining and well structured soils. I’ve seen good peas grown on clay soils BUT they have been really well set up the autumn before - that is key to good peas - get your cultivations right now. Depending on who you contract through some merchants work closely with Keith Costello and he will give you the blueprint to grow good peas. If your merchant doesn’t work with him then I’d suggest getting in touch and paying a consultation with him direct as he is the all seeing, all knowing when it comes to peas.

Had Aviator to try, alongside Karioka, in response to some glowing blurb I saw (which was obviously written by a man who grows them for seed  ).
Short answer; stick with Karioka, they stood better, ripened earlier, and there were many fewer open pods.
