Lorry trailer

On Facebook today somebody was asking if they could alter the gearing on a David brown tractor to give a faster road speed and somebody put a picture of a trailer they made out of a Bedford lorry the lorry gear box was connected to the tractor pto and you selected a gear put the pto in gear and of you went has anyone seen anything like this before it looked to me like it could end badly

Early days there were two different final drives ratios,, we had 2 990s one of each, these were the days of shell fenders and the faster one also had 38" tyres, against 36" one did around 16 mph the other around 25 mph.

Sounds fine for a road run or such, but the brakes where never the best on a DB, and if you met a hill pulling weight you soon right down the gearbox. I didn't like it and traded it for a 1210.

FIL tells a story of him & his FIL doing something similar many years ago. Went across the old A45 at a rate of knots apparently :ROFLMAO:
Mind his would be Ford!

Two ratios I knew of 9/50 and 10/49 but it appears there was also 11/49 as well, this was stamped on the end of the final drive shaft, you could read it through the wheel centre.

I bought a leyland 270 from a deceased estate about 1985
It could do 40mph which was utterly petrifying, with a black cloud pouring out the exhaust.
Someone had tampered with the gears i was told
I sold it to allan swinbank for 12 times what i paid, which took me to tenerife for a fortnight!😁

@Netherfield will know the answer as I can't remember. What was the steel wheel that could be fitted on the back of a cropmaster and used to lift one back wheel of the ground? If you did this and used the brake on that wheel you could go like hell on the road with sparks from the steel wheel.

That was to let you stop moving but maintain pto drive in the days of no ipto and single clutches.

Got to admit I never saw one of those, although I've heard the story, and of one or two working nights getting in to trouble over doing it.

Going back to Cropmaster days most extra bits were added at the factory, whereas later the dealers did them, there was a building called the cathedral where this was done. Even later this building was still in use, such as a standard wheel size in the 12xx tractors was 12 x 38 if you wanted 14 x 34 from new it went down the line and then to the cathedral where the wheels would be changed over.
