Maize harvest

Anybody thinking of cutting forage maize next week? Been looking at ours and much as the calendar says it shouldn’t be fit, it looks like it needs to come off soon.

Ours is ready, due to start next week. Our late drilled (after first cut grass) that was irrigated will be 3-4 weeks later, the unirrigated bit will be cut with the mower and JF trailed forager as there is virtually nothing there.

Have a couple of fields on stronger land just about fit. May chop them this week. The rest is very uneven, some cobs more forward than others. All the fields look very green. Could be a very staggered harvest

I’ve been testing samples all day. We aim for 32% to 34% and most fields are 7-14 days away. What do people expect yields to be? Some really showy tall maize only has 4" cobs. Some short stuff has half decent ones. Over 900ac we normally average 18t, I’d take 14t at the moment!!

Our shorter stuff has decent cobs, just like you. I have not seen that before. Even late drilled stuff (after first cut grass) which had zero rain until last week, about 3 feet tall, has 3" cobs and good cob fill.

Future Biogas started at Swaffham, dry matters between low 20s and 45 in the same field. Yields substantially down on last year but starches well up. They will be harvesting next to us next week.
