In your opinion/experience whats the general cause of them failing? Lack of grease on that half hidden top grease nipple so pin seizes & peels the end cap back, abuse, general wear & tear or just crap rams?

Thin wall rams and 275bar main pressure doesnt help(n)

Grease or lack of will not make a jot of differance to the ram cracking.

what model its it??
We had one go on a 10 plate 634 we bought second hand at 2000 hours. Had someone suggest to me that top pin getting tight put extra strain on that weld. They did say they were a common thing to go. Ours got glued back together & lasted for years until just before we traded it in at 6.5k hours.

you can either be lucky at welding a ram or have catastrophic failure. Hidden hair line cracks in tubes CAN not be welded over or they just split open as below and without warning.

Cracked welds if there not hiding hair line cracks in the tube can be repaired but i would only recomend it done by a full strip of ram, cut all the welds off and clean up each part then reweld from scratch if there are no hair line cracks in the cylinder tube or steel pipes.

Well i dont want to jinx it but the new ag 635 uses the same tilt ram part number as the old 634 machines :X3: in fact i shoudl add that info to mysite lol
Never had one go since but after tilt ram issues & needing that gurt long ram inside the boom we’ve kept everything (vaguely) in warranty. Current 635 is a friday afternoon machine though…or possibly tuesday morning after a full weekend & bank holiday bender!

I went through a number of rams on 634 machines. Not changed any since the 635 came out

Bg

Interestingly there does appear to be 2 different 299905 rams according to parts book. Serta and Wipro are different manufactures and dispite still having the same part number the internals and seal kit are different! so thats one to watch out for if anyone asks for just a seal kit! Seems a balls up from manitou to me they should have a different part number.

I had the end crack on my mla 628, strangely it appeared to have been rebarreled already.
The firm I took it to said they took the bad weld right out on a lathe then started afresh. No trouble since.

We replaced main lift, compensator and tilt ram on our 627 due to cracks and leaks.

That loader got to about 5000hrs fairly easily then despite my best efforts to keep on top of things became a money pit. I even bought a second loader to help it out but that just resulted in the mechanic virtually living here. So when I was offered a barely used near new replacement at sensible money I got rid of both of them for it.
