MAP where to use

I have got 19t of MAP to use, I’ve never used it before and don’t know much about it.
Where should I use it?
50kg/ha Down spout infront of spring crops?
Spread on top?

it wants using soon as is a couple years old.

It's even more soluble than DAP and is normally too expensive vs DAP to feature on farm very often. 50 kg/ha isn't much starter N if it's the 12.52.0 version. What are the P indices of the fields like?

They are high 1’s and 2’s. I can spin urea on a week or two before drilling. Or should I do it the other way round? I don’t want to use loads of P but make use of the stuff.

It would be a great starter fertiliser down the spout, but depends on your logistics. What else would you use instead down the spout?

Adam, I would put it down the spout at drilling. MAP is a great starter fertiliser, with the benefit of having a slightly lower salt index than DAP and will also create a more acidic zone around it, vs. DAP which will create an alkaline condition - useful if you are on high pH soils. As @Brisel says, obviously 50kg/ha is not going to go very far in terms of supplying N for crop requirement but along with the P, placed with seed should give a nice pop up effect.

(If you do it please can you switch off on a run or two and see if any visual difference at emergence?)

P.S. I see you have 19t, so at 50 kg/ha this will go a fair way! It would be good to try a few different rates...

As others have stated, put it down the spout at drilling. You will see a difference I would put money on it. I know that the amounts of N and P are small but that tiny amount will be right in the path of the little adventitious roots very early in the game and they search for N and P very early on. In maize you will see any misses very very readily and they affect the crop for weeks.

Do not however, ignore P or K indices being low in the belief that the bit of starter you are using will offset them. Correct P and K indices as normal using 0.24.24 or fibrophos etc ahead of time.

I wouldn't use MAP or DAP to spread on top with a regular spreader. For spring crops I would put on your nitrogen/sulphur does early as usual and ignore the small amount of N in the MAP.

thanks, this was originally what i was thinking but needed re-affirmation

If for some reason your spring plans don't happen I would consider using the stuff down the chute in autumn crops. Again I would expect to see a big difference in the vigour and health of the crop. I know in many regions of the world they are big on starter fertiliser. I certainly saw big differences in establishment and over winter survival of crops in different fertility situations.
