Moldy haylage

Usually make hay here for winter feeding sheep, but got caught out last summer and had to wrap it for haylage, was brought in with a soft hands grab and stacked up on end in a shed 3 high, seems to be too many bales with mold on them, what do you think the reason might be ?

Crop too dry ( and maybe bit too steamy ) before picking up and bales not tight enough? Actually something that a lot dont consider is that Wrap is not as airtight as you think.

Should've stacked um on their sides :sneaky:😁

If its dry and mouldy then either its crap quality wrap or not enough layers or wrap has got punctured, we make haylage for horses and its virtually hay, will get the occasional one that has a bit of mould, they still eat it and it's better than dusty hay even well made hay contains dust

It needs at least 6 layers, we use 8 on horse spec haylage, it needs to be wrapped and stacked quickly and mature grass won't keep well if it's too dry.
Baling them as tight as possible, chopping them and net replacement film will also help.
I also prefer to cradle bales than squeeze them and stack them on their side.

I'd sooner not do it , stuff of nightmares

More wrap required, I'm sure its not as good as it was, last 3 or 4 years we have had unacceptable moulds, did a wee drop last year with six layers and perfection, all was done with 6 this year and perfection. Same wrapper, same everything, always wrapped at the stack. Never used to need 6 layers........
