Just walk along the Thames and stop at a pub or Borough market for lunch.
South Bank probably an easier walk with fewer obstacles.
Free and great views of architecture and even better people watching!!

I love walking cities. It’s all you need to do really, just wander about and soak it all up.

Spent a lovely day last year, starting at St Paul’s, across the wobbly bridge to the Tate Modern (wandered around in there for a bit) before heading out all along the S Bank to Westminster Bridge via a cafe for lunch (past the Eye-glad we didn’t bother with that; it was rammed!). Then South to the IWM for the afternoon.

Remember Mum and Dad taking us to London in the mid 60's. Drove from North Essex in a mk 1 Cortina, parked beside Cleopatra Needle, no charge. Able to walk to most of the sights, great day out. Took our kids about 15 years ago by Nat Express coach, what a difference, vowed never to go again. Must be even worse now.

Those were the days.

You could even walk down Downing Street - there's a pic somewhere of me standing on the step of Number 10 with a policeman.
It's a long time ago, but I seem to remember he said he wanted to be promoted to Chief Constable if I ever got to live inside.

If the family are up for walking, then none of London in the interesting centre is far apart. As said above the Thames walks are good. St Paul's magnificent,China Town and tiny restaurants, down to Westminster and the Royal Parks.

A West End show Thats if you don't mind having your wallet molested, just to sit through 2 hours of camp warbling.

Accommodation, the Premier Inn at old GLC building on the South Bank is great value, a big breakfast, and as central as it gets.

2nd the Imperial War Museum, but it's bit of treck if the tube drivers are still complaining that £59,000 isn't enough.
That is a good Prem Inn, Mrs Bg was born in Westminster so she gets a bit shaky going south of the River 😂

Churchills war rooms are really worth a visit

TBH, it will depend on the teenage interests, but the big Museums are great.

Natural History, Science, V&A, War Museum... All worthy of a day alone for each one!
These, also Kids love Ripleys believe it or Not
The Meleniam Wheel
Just Walking down Horse Guards and See Changing of the Guard , walk up the Mall to Buckingham Pallace . Hyde Park is lovely
Be prepared for long queues for the first suggestion, things like trafalgar square , lovely and no queues
Me , I just tour around on my bike dodging traffic and taking it all in
Covent Garden
Plenty of street entertainment there , no queues and it's free apart from tips

Plenty of fun pubs about. Just go down any backstreet in central London really and take your pick.
My brother worked in one for years just off Trafalgar Square that was about the size of a normal living room. Weirdly hardly any tourists went there as it was just slightly off the main drag.

Lots of suggestions there people thanks plenty research needed for a Scottish bumpkin
Don't be put off by the detractors

If the tube is on strike the normal buses may be busy but you can see so much on the top of a normal double decker bus. Study the Transport For London web page to work out some routes - maybe travelling between areas you've chosen

Walk from Westminster Square via Whitehall past Downing Street and then down The Mall to Buckingham Palace

Second walk along the South Embankment from Tower Bridge past the Shakespeare Round House

Choose any type of cuisine and you can find it

Camden area for shopping

Yes, Churchill’s underground war bunker - OH toured that while awaiting a flight out. Very impressed.

I lived / lodged and worked in London during Uni holidays to keep my horse in shoes😁 Not a place I’d choose to visit too often. I was working as a demonstrator in several Oxford St stores….
