Metcalfe points all fitted! Just need to resurrect the fan and we are good to go!
Hi @Clive, Is this Co drill your own unit and if so have you done any work with the Metcalf coulters in the past? I currently have a Co8 on Duets and on heavy clay this spring weather and wheat prices are making me think even more about costings ,I am thinking of replacing the duets with either Metcalf coulters as above or Dutch openers but a little unsure about 10 inch rows ??
If you have used either coulters in the past how do you rate yield, moisture retention ,Black grass control and yield ??,Also could you tell me where I could get the Metcalf coulters and any idea on cost ?? cheers Mike

The drill in this thread in mine yes - it will be used for the first time this spring alongside our 750a so cant comment on results first hand yet, give it a few weeks though and I will post some pics and video of it working !

however I've seen enough research and spoken to enough people to be fairly confident that 10" rows are only a good thing and I have grown 10" in the past with a seed hawk that still hold the farm record for a crop of wheat here

Metcalfe points are available direct from JJ Metcalfe - your looking at about £60-70 a leg to convert, the dutch openers are even more I believe ?? I'm hoping mine will be a fair bit cheaper and should wear better with the Ferobide tip vs the Metcalfe tungsten, I'm also going to incorporate an air bleed and fert delivery option into my seed pipe

if they work as I expect them to and I know the definite cost I will make my coulter available - if anyone is interested let me know please as I expect the more I have laser cut the cheaper they will get

next week would be too soon I'm afraid and I wouldn't want to take any money off anyone for them until I have proven to myself they work as well as I expect them to, my first set are still being cut and welded next week

By the end of April I will know for sure the design is right and exactly what they are costing so wouldn't want to promise anything until then which would give anyone interested plenty of time to get and fit them ready for autumn

@Clive could you explain how the steering axle works on the drill please. Is it passive or hydraulically powered? I am considering some changes to my seedhawk and a Horsch seedcart could be the answer.

Thanks

its a mechanical linkage from the drawbar - not used in anger yet so please excuse my (as yet) limited understanding of its operation

Thanks Clive
We run the newer version, a Sprinter SW which is has a mechanical steering unit much the same as a CO. You have the ability of steering the caddy with hydraulics, but this is more of an aid to get you into gateways. I'm sure you could rig this up to help steer the drill on banks, through GPS but as the drill is a rigid-rig you can't use it to tramline like a sprayer.

Oats into grazed cover.

Pleased with the level of disturbance and it seems to have covered the slots pretty well.

Did you use the 'New' drill this spring?

Not yet, all our spring cropping was direct into covers where the 750a is the better choice

I also haven't got the points made yet, wasn't happy with the first one we had made as a prototype.

Been very busy with spring work but should get back on the project this month

Have you had a chance to get any further with this yet?
