Afternoon all.
An export deal of some calves from a nearby dairy farmer fell through at the 11th hour so I bought them off him in the Autumn. Thought it might be fun to try my hand at showing.
Not expecting to take the world by storm, just enter the local show in September.

Any tips? Pic is of this morning- day two of halter training!

They look nice heifers. My advice would be to get in touch with the HYB club for your area and get an experienced young person to come over and show you how to prepare and present your heifers in the show ring, or even better , get them to do it!

Thank you. I have a 14 year old helper keen to have a go. My stockman shows beef cattle and sheep so he has half an idea but has never shown dairy.
I can’t present them myself as I’m show Livestock Chairman- so a bit of a conflict there 🤣.
There isn’t too much HYB or indeed dairy showing round here. The pedigree herds are so terrified of TB they won’t show and the non pedigree block calving types don’t have the right type of cow. Part of the reason I’m trying to bolster entries!

There used to be big show circuit around Surrey / Kent / Sussex with the Surrey show always having a really good entry.

Sussex and Kent are pretty good for showing- not much TB round there and no pre movement testing needed.

The Surrey show packed up a few years ago. My local show bought all the cattle stalling off them.

Sorry I got confused I mean Edinbridge and Oxted show. The pedigree guys in Hampshire never seemed big of showing even before tb edge area. You could have bought a jersey there always used to be good few of them at Alresford.

Yes it’s the Alresford show I’m involved with. We get a healthy number of cattle, but definitely room for a few more. I bought 25 calves off the guy, not just the two. They needed moving in 24 hours after the export job fell through but before his whole herd TB test. I’m not halter training all 25 though🤣

Edenbridge and Oxted is massive so I’m told. I’ve never managed to make it though as my stockman is always showing his own cattle there so I have to cover the work back here.

@kfpben

pop along to south of England show if you can , (strong dairy show classes there)

and then walk a bit further to the beef cattle and say hello to us (y) or bring overalls and a white coat and help :ROFLMAO:

There are 2 sorts of folk show cattle. Some are terrified to tell you anything incase you threaten their dominance. Fortunately the majority are delighted to see a new face turn up and will be happy to help you out. Especially if you bring beer 🤣
if some one beats me in the ring , then they have to buy the beer afterwards. simples

winning can get expensive (well that's my excuse for not ever winning)🍻🍻🍻:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

That’s very kind. My stockman is showing his other halves cattle there though so I need to stay at home. Charolais, Herefords and Lims.
I am hoping to have a few days off earlier in that week and get to the Royal Cornwall on the Thursday.,
