David Browns were often notoriously slow letting a trailer down , with another filter i would still be waiting :)
I think they returned through the valve chest and that was the nightmare

770s were unique in not being available with the optional "dump valve"...which released the pressure in the valve chest allowing trailers and empty lift arms to be lowered quicker

as already stated, tipping through the double acting valves allowed for a faster drop

when i mentioned "another filter" the idea i was referring to was the hydrashift oil pump, built into the gearbox, which takes its feed from a gauze stack built into the main transmission drain plug, then supplys oil to the hydrashift control valve mounted on top of the hydrashift unit. Had they piped the hydrashift pump to an external canister filter, and then onto the control valve, it would have solved all the usual hydrashift problems associated with blocked orifices in the sequence valves which control the opening and closing of the clutch packs and brake band units

The "main" hydraulic filter, located on the back axle, makes no difference to the speed of lowering on either arms or external services, it simply filters the oil prio to going through the selectamatic valve

In the case of a tandem pump tractor, the first pump supplied oil through the filter to the valve chest, the second pump was piped direct to the combining valve, without passing through the filter, as this oil would only ever go through the external spools and return to the gearbox

both pumps were served by the huge gauze strainer underneath the gearbox though

I have never known anything as slow to lower the arms as the 1394, mind you its not as bad now that assister ram has been removed

ive known for the seals in the assistor rams to swell and cause the ram to bind slightly, making them very slow at lowering

You do know there is a quick drop feature on the 94s? It requires the main lift lever to be adjusted properly though

with the arms fully up, push the lift lever to lower, when it gets about an inch away from the front of its slot, you should feel it reach a "stop"...push it further and it springs back against you.

Its a 2 handed job, but try pushing the lever against the spring and pulling the dump valve at the same time...see what happens then

Probably
Was second hand when we got it had a qd90 loader on it and was a bit of a weapon with the back Tyres water loaded although we had a hyrdoshift 13 at the time and everybody would jump in it first in fact spread millions of gallons of slurry with it an a 1300 Mc tanker and it went everywhere even though it was 2wd

A Tommy Wilson diamond deal? (y)
I'd rather have had a 14 for slurry
1394 drum brakes and full tankers (n)

Ah tommy was the man tbh the brakes were never an issue although the hitch snapped once with my dad and the tanker had to be dug four foot out a banking
Loved the hydrashift think that's why my tractors all are powerquad

Tommy retired now?
Hydrashift seems to be a bit like marmite, although to be fair a lot of the folk I've heard of who had problems with it weren't the best at maintenance
There's a man at Dumbarton got a 1394 hydrashift that he won in a farmers weekly competition , apparently it still runs very well

Same tractor? Is that yours in the first photo?

Who are the men in suits, and why the occasion?

I have a picture of one of ours in it's early days, in a copy of Tractor News. I brought the newspaper on ebay, I got really excited when I realised it was my tractor in it!

God I'm sad!

I think it's getting to the stage where the whole tractor concept needs a massive rethink. We're all too used to the small wheels at the front, big wheels at the back concept.

Jcb have tried and succeeded to some extent with the fastrac to come up with something different and better. But i think there is a lot more scope for improvement. It's just the technology isn't there yet.

For example how hard could it be to get a genset, bung a cab on it and 4 electric wheel motors. That gets rid of almost all the drive train and problems that go with it. Bang a linkage and drawbar on the back and another electric motor for PTO drive and it's sorted. A bit of smart thinking would make it modular so it could be upgraded easily if more power was needed in future.

Of course it can't be that simple or it would have been done by now.
It is that simple - they've been doing it for years.

Mining dumpers, 100 tonne-plus excavators, trains - all diesel engines powering generators with electric drive at the wheels. It's not new, either - the original design of Tiger tank had independent electric drive motors for each track.

Electric motors generate tremendous torque. They're flippin' expensive, though.
