We have those portable rechargeable Bluetooth speakers. They aren’t waterproof but that’s not much of an issue

typically I’m on the verge of destroying it with a hammer

I have one of these in the dry....

..... and four of these up high in the parlor. Decent speakers and plenty of them mean you don't need it loud.

There's not a chance I'd ever wear headphones or let anyone milking wear them.

I would get one with internet so you can listen to an internet station without ads.
Before we had a robot I listened to a small radiostation in my village. Really good fun the dj, and you could whatsapp him for a bit of banter, also he would play any music I asked for, so it was regularly metal in the morning 🤟

Just on the back of this ….

What music do cows like best? Our staff seem to prefer Heart FM but it’s possible we are missing out on some marginal litres here.

You would be best off with something like SmoothFM for the cows.... whether you can stand it day in day out is another matter. Father sometimes puts it on in the tractors... I can manage for half a day. They don't like shouty music with big shifts and massive beats.... they like easy listening and soul from what I remember. Someone did a study on it a few years ago.

I have an old hifi separate tuner, a cheap Chinese amp and some speakers from an old midi system, with the electronics in the office to keep them dry. You will also find with better electronics and a cleaner sound, you can hear it better without having to turn it up so much as you might with a ropey signal that crackles and hisses. Before the Chinese amp we had an old and cheap but decent enough hifi amp and that was quite a bit clearer. I think the electric noise from the milking parlour affects the power supply on the cheap amp a fair bit, but even it is a better sound than the naff old kids mini system we had before, that had been in the damp parlour too long before we built the new office. Mini system is in the workshop now, it takes half an hour to 'warm up' where the volume is a bit random. Good luck changing the station on it too... it might get something other than Radio Lancashire but it really isn't worth the hassle.

I am a relief milker and there is no radio. Wondering if a potable Bluetooth speaker linked to my phone will do. Have no idea about how many watts it would need to be. Any advice? Thanks. Ma Larkin.

That’s what our lot have in place now linked to Amazon playlist off a volunteer’s phone.

Sometimes it’s horrific, sometimes it’s just about listenable to

Get some earphones.
Exactly how can a milker hear a kicked off unit if they’ve headphones or an earpiece in.
You can still hear things as long as you don't have it stupid loud, just the same as if it were a radio or speaker. Also a set of working eyes is generally required for milking so they will help too.

Music/podcasts/books make a boring job more bearable.
