Planting ww into AB15

Sorry if this has been covered before. A bit of a newbe to direct drilling, have started with neighbours drilling with there (new to them) weaving drill. Have a couple of fields coming out of a 2 year legume ley (ab15), we cut them for silage a couple of weeks ago. Was thinking of spraying them off and drilling the ww with weaving soon. Ground is quite heavy, agronomist is worried about grass dying off and making it too acidic for ww to germinate. My father thinks we need to use sumo and power harrow, I would like to try and direct drill and hopefully keep some of the good the legume ley has done. What is the best way to direct drill the ww.

The decaying grass will only make the soil acidic in anaerobic conditions ie wet. You can compensate for this with prilled lime. Provided your soil structure is OK I’d crack on with drilling it straight in, you’re right when you say that it would be better to try and keep the good the legume ley has done.

Thanks, how long before you drill would you spray off the ley?

48 hours as a minimum but really the longer it’s sprayed off, if you’re going to do it before planting, the better. However don’t forget that a week post planting is an option and one that I’d probably opt for. You can mix your glyphosate with any pre em that you might wish to choose and only have to spray it once.

Whats the PH now
We bang Limex on to help with acid die back
Yiu can spray after drilling if you want but don't leave it long and spread lime 5 days after not before
You need the seed in as close to spraying as poss so spraying after as advantages - being the seed gets away before grass is dieing back and forming acid conditions

Perhaps worth looking at the TFF Weaving GD users thread. There are examples of others doing exactly what you want to do drilling Cereals direct into grassy Leys and spraying it off With Glyphosate with the pre em - Very successfully!

Crack on and get rid of that bloody Sumo!

acid produced after burying a large amount of debris
if it has been sillage ed then the soil will cope with the amount of residue
slug are a potential risk in wetter conditions but early planting is a good counter to them
