Possible expansion of NATO

At the moment it's the best place for them, but when they were close to independence, then plans were put in place to move them south obviously. I guess these are mothballed now until they do withdraw. They're parked in Scotland for 2 reasons, the trickle down effect of the forces being paid and based in the region to help the Scottish economy and the fact that if something terrible happened it won't affect as many people.
One of the options being put forward is moving them to the French navel base at Île Longue in Brittany. 😁 :banghead:

It is a shame these discussions spiral into slanging matches so quickly.

A really interesting subject too.

FWIW non aligned countries would not be joining J and Mogg (eeeww) but one of the most formidable military alliances on the planet.
Well really how can a nation talk of international cooperation when it’s own government is utterly untrustworthy?

The irony isn't lost on me I assure you..but Nato is so much more than a couple of politicians.

I have pondered that the UK seems like it might be heading for non aligned status..

An odd choice now but a logical extension of brexit thinking..

Who knows what the map will look like in 70 years of 200 years time. Alliances and nations come and go..

Too philosophical?

Talking to someone who has good knowledge on a lot of political things in most countries going back decades if not centuries and I asked him yesterday what the script was and from what he worked out with Russia and Ukraine was that Russia wanted a blank country between NATO countries and mainland Russia, if Ukraine joined NATO then missiles could be placed alongside the Russian border ready to launch against Russia 🤷🏻‍♂️ By having Ukraine in the middle they’d have a bit of warning. Very similar to when the Soviets put missiles on Cuba that could hit US soil back in the 50-60’s

Hypersonic missiles now travel at around 3,800 mph, so not very much more time!

And it is Putin’s ( and China’s ) development of such weapons which is causing a new arms race. Putinalso fails to mention his placing of a large number of missiles in Kaliningrad in apparent breach of previous agreements, which is causing so much angst in the Baltic states. This enclave to the uninitiated cuts the land bridge between Poland and the rest of the Baltic and Nordic states. There close neighbours fear it will in the long term be used as an excuse by Russia to try and reclaim old territory. Oddly of course it was never part of Russia having been seized from Germany at the end of WW2

St Brendan set out from Kerry way, way, back when men were men. Discovered America a thousand years before Cristopher Columbus as much as had his first provisional licence. Rumour has it, he swung round by Rockall, and claimed it for Paddy.
One of the greatest Englishmen ever, Tim Severin, who I had the pleasure to get to know, was always fascinated by the St. Brendan theory of having sailed to America. He set out to prove it was indee possible. And he succeeded.👍. An amazing character.
Christy Moore ten immortalised St Brendan in one of his witty ballads.
