OH recently had a Rav briefly as we needed a bigger car quickly and this was available locally. We both hated it, everything about it annoyed me. Despite being invincible spec, it was noisy, poor to drive, and the infotainment / sat nav system was awful.

Swapped it within 3 months for a Mazda CX5 AWD. Similar age cars, but the Mazda is so much better in every way apart from being ever so slightly smaller.

What age, and are you looking 2wd or 4wd? 2wd rav 4 seem more common, same with the majority of these small SUV’s. If you need more than 1600kg towing capacity, then it has to be the tiguan.

The 2.0 and 2.2 diesel Rav's are ok but the engines , rarely for them, are actually their weakness. Avoid like the plague the old 2.2 180 bhp as they suffer head lift with carbon and the head gaskets go. Almost impossible to skim to make them good again. The later 2.0 again is ok but the usual diesel issues apply. Despite what one poster says they are actually very refined for a diesel of its vintage.
The Mazda 2.0 diesel is nice to use but suffers from oil pick up issues with the pick up filter blocking causing major engine problems. We won't even risk taking them or the Mazda 6 in as part exchange for exactly that reason. Both cars however have generally lovely and very reliable petrol engines. The Toyota's are definitely tougher over the much higher mileages and I am talking trim, suspension et al
The Honda CRV has very good engines in terms of diesels and are generally more reliable than either of the above with only EGR pipes ( about £400 to replace ) and dpf issues at higher mileages ( but again taken off and properly cleaned makes them good again for a long time ). With good regular servicing they last a long time.
Again the petrols are all but bomb proof. I would go for a RAV or a CRV if you want a better chance of solid and reliable
