Hi All,
I've lurked here periodically, but yet to post anything. So this is a bit of a hello post, as well as a plea for help.
Back in 1987 my mother bought 30 acres in the south-east that she runs as a small holding. My dad built a pole barn to house sheep, horses and hay and equipment. It's always been a bit of a family affair, although farming isn't my full time job, but machinery maintainance is my responsibility.
We've always run elderly equipment, and found that parts availability for anything green or blue to be pretty easy. We started with a 1973 IH 454, then a1971 Ford 3000. The IH went and was replaced with a luxurious 1981 JD1640. Last year we picked up a 1988 Renault 68-12 with MX loader that was fairly local and affordable, as we needed something stronger than the old Ford 3000 to run a flat 8. This is our idea of modernisation to save on the amount of manual effort that goes into our harvest The 3000 put up a valiant effort but it really was asking too much of it. Time for it to retire before I wreck it I think.
The Renault is very capable, and in fair shape for a 33 year old machine. I have read that the 4 pot MWM engine has a good reputation. The hour meter stopped working at over 7550 hrs, although I've no idea how long ago that was.
It does have a few jobs to sort out.
Number 1 has been the brakes, one side of which was binding, plus general reluctance to work in reverse. I've had the brake housings all apart and found them packed solid with dust, although a fair amount of friction material was left. A good clean out identified a cracked actuator unit and evidence of serious over heating at some point, with cracked lining material that I intend to replace. I can hopefully get a replacement Sparex actuator, although they are on back order at the moment.
This is my first encounter with dry disc brakes, but it seems they are fairly common on older model tractors. Unfortutely the Renault parts are twice the price of the more common brands.
Job 2 is a notable leak from the lower link arm shaft. Can anyone tell me what is involved in replacing these seals, and where they can be sourced? Maybe they're just a regular oil seal
Job 3 is another oil leak from the left side axle seal. Over a week of sitting there will be oil running down the wheel rim.
The fuel gauge seems to read 3/4 all the time, so that would be useful to sort out.
Unlike most other makes there seems to be a notable void in terms of service manuals for this make of machine. Parts manuals and diagrams are always a great help to look at to see how things com apart, if only I can find a copy.
So to summarise, can anyone suggest a reliable source of Renault parts, and parts/service manuals? I have a operator manual but that only covers everyday maintenance. Any help would be greatly appreciated
