My mother in law is with us at the moment, and she lives near Knepp castle in Sussex which has been rewilded.

No small concern, I was shocked to learn, it’s 3500acres !

Aside from the tourist stuff how does this work financially ?

EU subs, in satisfyingly large wheelbarrow loads, and none of that silly old farming business to worry about.

The block of 160ac we’ve had on grass keep then contract farmed (grass keep but more complicated) has just been accepted for January 1st start date on rewinding under css. It was getting bad before but now it’s going to be a disaster. Owner works in abroad and wants nothing to do with it. They’ve told me basically nothing about the details but apparently it requires set stock grazing with cattle, horses and pigs (organically) and all internal fencing removed. I am looking forward to seeing the details and working out how much I can charge as I want almost every penny of this madness. Simply finding the stock on a daily basis will be hard enough before you factor 60 day Tb tests etc! Woods, valleys 160ac and 30 rare breed pigs all a shade of brown. What could go wrong?

Sorry, I grow fruit and have no idea what these things pay, or how they work.

They will go wild, and that will be fun.

I have some friends who milk goats and they have outlying ´wild’ garrigue land. They use a GPS collar to find them for milking.

Was at knepp last summer. Fascinating place making the most of proximity to London for the tourist end. But over here we d lose bps as ground not productive farmland. Is it different in England?

Hi @Horn&corn what is css?
I think this has been covered before ,eu grants make up £500 k plus per year ?
BPS on 3500 acres would be a fair chunk of that but still quite dependant on government funds ?
I don’t think the majority of people want the countryside rewilded
It is about removing people from the landscape
I think most people appreciate the connection between people and the landscape
The hedges , copses, drystone walls ,and small things like the stone gate post with ancient forged gate hinges the beautiful stone bridge or stepping stones across the river
When walking around the country I notice that these are the places people stop to rest or eat lunch .when walking in Scottish wilderness again it is the remains of the Croft or the old stone bridge that people pause at
It is this connection between people and a landscape that is most precious about our island
Rewinding seeks to sever this and remove people from it
I appreciate that this may have beneficial effects for new and different wildlife but I don’t think it is widely supported .

How it works......
You get paid to make your land unproductive.
They stop paying but your land isn't able to change because it is 'environmentally important'.
There is a shortage of food and you get paid to make it productive again.

You mean you get paid to make your land valueless and then can't ever farm it again be ause it's deemed to be an ecological necessity. Bet there inheritors love the idea.....
