Road planings

Been offered some but I'll keep the price out for the minute as I'm keen on having the material!

Looking at repairing an existing farm track.

Never laid them before so how difficult is it to work with? What sort of prep do I need to do on the ground?

How much would I get an 8 wheeler - I'm guessing that's an artic?
Cheers

20 ton max in an 8 wheeler and they are not artic.
Lay similar to crusher run, ideally laid over coarser stuff on top of a membrane but have seen plenty just panings, needs to be a bit thicker if that's what you are doing.

They are good........... add some diesel with them and use a whacker, they go down very well.

Cost if off the road, straight into your farm that is close will be around £200 load (aprox 20 tonnes)
They will probably want more, so negotiate............ if it's a late night job and convenient for the road gang, you have an advantage.

Night deliveries are always well loaded up.

Costs jump around a lot, it’s £400 plus if they come out of the yard.

I pay anything between £100 - £200 a load (18-20t) and always say yes to what ever they offer, it’s cheap aggregate. If you can get their numbers and just say yes they always ring you first when in area.

quality can be iffy, motorways is the best with back roads being the worst.

They are indeed often sent back to be recycled so there is a massive shortage of them around us, hence why it’s always a yes when the ring, could easily sell on if needed!

If they sit for a while they set hard and you really need and excavator to deal with them
Don’t they ever! I bought a couple of 20 tonne loads last year, used about half and the remaining half got left until I tried to load them a month or so back to fill some potholes - could barely scrape the surface with the loader on my old DB 1390. Neighbour managed to loosen up a bit using his twin bale fork and it looks to be only surface hardening. I had loosening up as a job for my local ‘man with digger” to do when he comes to do a few jobs but he’s very busy ( other things, not digging this weather😀) so ended up buying a fresh load at considerable expense. Have to say don't begrudge the money, being able to load the trailer with half a dozen bucket loads in 30 mins rather than hour or more to load 1/4 of the amount!
