Has anyone seen take all in Rye? We have been growing it for 5 years and now see it in our crop as confirmed by the lab report below. The history of one block of ground is as follows:
Up to 2015 Permanent Grassland
2016 Winter Rye
2017 Winter Rye
2018 Spring Triticale - take all observed
2019 Winter Oats
2020 Winter Rye - take all observed
This land isn’t really suitable for maize or potatoes, so it’s hard to get a good rotation. It’s a bit far away from the yard to go back into grass for silage.
So can anyone tell us, if we grow continuous rye, can we hope for take all decline like some of the continuous wheat growers have achieved? In practice what should we expect to happen?
KWS have told us that take all hasn’t been an issue in GB. On the take all scale, oats are zero, rye is five, whereas wheat and barley are something like 60+. I find it hard to believe that we can be the first so thought I would ask the farming forum if anyone has much experience with this disease and how to mitigate it.
