almost 100% certain there was no electric shift on the T72 velvet shuttles, wouldn't really be possible as the forward reverse is a rotary cross shaft in the top of the box rotated by a cable. G reg is 1990 by which time the spicer turner box was used in stead of the T72 or Borg warner what ever you like to call it.

The spicer turner boxes in sandersons were all electric shift but there was a cable version of it used in manitous!
What did Mantou use in the later 90s and what is in the NH hybrids?

both spicer turner, traces its routes back to the first spicer turner boxes in the sandersons and the early manitous. Technically i think manitou were using the box first as it was in the MLT 626 series 1 that came out in 1989 and possibly in some other models before that but not sure IMO.

Had a look up the back of the dash and my mistake the forward reverse lever does not appear to be electric, I assumed it was because it looks like such a small lever. Looks like it moves a rod. I'll get a better look in daylight tomorrow.

I had the handbrake in bits and it's just badly adjusted and both friction discs are worn a lot more on one side on the other. Does anyone know where to buy replacement friction discs, if they are cheap enough I will replace them otherwise I'll adjust it and make do with what I have.

Next question, the hydraulics... I think I need more engine RPM than should be necessary to operate the arm so I hope the pump is not on the way out. The fork tilt works fine and up/down works fine, extending out works fine but when I try to pull back in it comes in a few inches then slowly stops. Even though I'm holding the lever back the whole time. If I let go of the lever and pull it back again it does the same, a few inches then stops.

Starting with the basics, is the hydraulic pump the small one behind the radiator at the back? I thought it was just a power steering pump but it has huge hoses. I think I've found the hydraulic fluid fill hole to the left of the pump, but there must be a dipstick somewhere? Any filter to check/change? Any other ideas?

Well you are pulling the tele back in does the engine labour? The hydraulics are not that quick on these machines. There are two part s of filtration for the system. a suction strainer (if still there) which is a pig to get at through the top of the tank and an in line filter under the side cover. If the suction is blocked you would get some juddering and cavitation noises.

Thanks Pete, no the engine doesn't labour, very strange. I found the inline filter where you said, I have drained the old fluid and have the tank out and see the filler neck unbolts from the tank to give an access hole so that will be where the suction strainer is. Will check it out later today and get fresh fluid and a filter and take it from there.

Also for anyone else reading later I checked and the column mounted fwd/reverse lever is definitely cable operated on my machine like ACEngineering said not electric as I first thought.

You can get at the strainer just without removing the tank and by moving a few pipes but it is a right pig. @ACEngineering is right, the Borg trans never had electric, I was confusing with the later trans. The slightly later neighbour's machine had a key stop on the Ford engine and for some reason had a much lighter shifting lever, where as mine has always been stiff even with a new cable.
