Saw this in Lidl
British Flour promoted on pack. No Red Tractor logo though.
If the people at Red Tractor had anything about them they'd be at Lidl trying to get the Red Tractor logo on pack in the same way as they do on produce, meat and chicken

No Red Tractor on this either, why would they, they can use the Union Jack for free, unlike farmers the retailers can avoid being bullied into joining Red Tractors protection racket and still promote British produce.
I’d buy that and not give a second thought about there not being a red tractor.

In fact,I’ve just been to our fridge and this Is what we have, half eaten.

The issue is, I believe with the processors choosing not to be Red Tractor audited at their sites. There is a significant cost to processors in being assured to RT standards and then they have to pay again in order to use the logo on pack. In a price competitive market they will no doubt have spoken to their customers , Aldi and Lidl and said that they can buy British with a Union Jack at a lower price than they would were they RT assured. Of course, those processors will be buying RT wheat and milk as it is near impossible not to buy RT assured wheat and milk. All of which shows that there isn't much value to RT on pack when 100% of production is RT assured.

Negative value you could suggest.

I suppose that the processor would argue that buying RT grain or RT milk is a guarantee of Britishness and enables them to use the Union Jack on their packaging. They are basically choosing to opt out of what they see as expensive and unneccessary 3rd party assurance. They will already have been assured under BRC Food Safety standards as that is, by and large, the base line that all supermarkets require from their supplierw

Why not try an experiment.

Put 2 identically packaged products on the shelf of a supermarket.

One will have a red tractor logo and the other will be 5% cheaper to reflect the difference in farmgate prices.

Guess which one will sell better.
Well, if you look at Cathedral City you have to hunt for the Red Tractor because (a) it's on the back of the pack and (b) they have created their own version in burgundy and gold. No doubt to keep the packaging cost down as a result of using fewer colours

I'd be very surprised if you could supply any major supermarket without some assurance scheme, they will demand it just to cover their own backs at the very least. They will have their own set of rules you must follow if they choose not to use RT.
If you have various customers that all require assurance of some sort it can be beneficial to be RT assured as you then only have one scheme to follow, what usually happens is each customer sends their own questionnaire with extra questions each year. We decided to stop supplying Booths because the time spent answering the bloody questions they asked made it not worth bothering with them.
