at the moment we run a vaderstad rapid 4mtr and we are thinking of changing for something newer we have no particular issues with the drill we have it does a good job and is well built , but we are thinking we should buy something a bit newer , but what would be the advantage of buying a vadi spirit or a great plains or anything similar

What do you want to do, other than put seed in the ground? Do you really need something that does some cultivation or is the seedbed already fine enough?

we do allsorts after beans or spuds we sometimes min till, we plough between wheat and barley and out of grass .we have a carrier and a sumo it all depends on the conditions ,we try to do as little disturbance as possible. i must say the rapid has done a good job up until now but last autumn the headlands suffered with the wet and we were wondering if it would be better to have the coulters behind the wheels

If you're going to run in the wet, having the coulters behind the press wheels is worse than useless. It won't cut the seed into tight ground and the drill will still be as heavy as a Rapid. That type of drill is great in dry conditions when the press wheels crumble a lot of clods though. IMO we're complicating the placement of seed by justifying these expensive heavy cultivator drills and the big tractors to pull them with. Too often I see 300+hp drilling seed into fine dust that would have been better off with a wider lighter drill on half the hp.

the first drill i had when i moved here was a four meter bamlet that was very similar but my advisors and son thought it was old hat and said i should get an accord air drill that was the worst drill i have ever had after that i had a power harrow combi but then the fashionistas said we should go for min till so we bought a vadi rapid, what i will say back in the seventies i had an old grey fergi drill and i could grow just as good crops with that as i ever have
