Spring barley after grass

We've ploughed out a field of crap grass and sown with spring barley as we do occasionally. The problem is that it is looking a bit yellow in the main part of the field (headriggs are greenish). All the rest of the barley fields are looking nice and green and healthy but they're all ploughed stubble. This ley field has received 3t/acre of lime pre-drilling and I'm thinking I may have read on a thread on here that barley out of ley often looks stressed post-germination for a certain reason but I can't remember what that reason is.

Could it be the high dose of lime? Or could it be a Mn problem? The plants look generally stressed (at the 2-3 leaf stage), looking like Mn deficiency symptoms typically. All of our spring barley looked like this last year because we got no rain after drilling for weeks. We've had a bit of rain this year in comparison so it's not a moisture problem per se. Every spring barley field was double cambridge rolled after last year's experience, I wasn't taking any chances this year. Is it that ploughed ley is harder to roll effectively and that's what I'm seeing?

Anyway, I've prob banged on enough, thoughts please?

It's had 50 units post emergence but that's all it's getting. I'm including a moderate rate of Mn in with the herbicide but am not planning on spraying the herbicide just yet as there are hardly any weeds poking through yet.

Spray Mn ASAP if you think that's what it is. If not mixing with herbs use powder and come back with a bit of liquid with the herb later.

I should also have mentioned that the ley field we ploughed out and sew with spring barley last year looked by far the worst of last year's barley fields too. It's obv a thing, I'm just looking for a solution for next year really. It's not leatherjackets either btw.

Any photos ?

Any history of mn deficiency?
We've always included Mn with our first spray but last year was the first that we've ever really seen deficiency symptoms at any stage of growth. Last year and this spring are the driest I've experienced in 30+ years of farming.

We cant get decent wheat crops after herbage seeds - must be something going on with the ploughed down turf - best crop was spring peas after winter ploughing and leaving for a few months.

The OP's situation is caused by the decaying turf of the sward beneath. I've seen it many times. Spray it with Mn and probably some Magphos K as soon as you can. Cloddy and dry or cold and wet seed beds do not help.

Put manganese in with the herbicide and fungicide- apply these just as the barley covers over. It will leap through growth stages faster than you can change your pants.

That's what it normally does, this is a year thing for us as I've explained. I may go with some Mn if it hasn't improved over the weekend.

What's mn? I have the exactly the same problem here as described by op. 2ton/ac lime and 200kg fert/ ac. Pre emergence spray. Looking abit yellow as if it's stressed
We used a pre-em last year for the first time ever. Complete and utter waste of time and money with the weather being so dry. Also it undoubtedly added to the stress of the crop which was already high.

You may find using seed dressed with managnese trace element useful.
I did think about that last summer but forgot to investigate when ordering seed this spring. Worth doing for ploughed ley fields in the future maybe. Also I'm wondering if the cold spell we've had just after emergence is not helping with the seedlings trying to find their feet and grow away from the seed.

First time i used pre em, it worked a treat. But last year didn't work because it was dry so long them when it did rain the weeds were strong enough to push up through or em. So had to spray weeds anyway as usual. Trying pre em again this year.

That sounds like I might've heard it before many moons ago. Field is low in K anyway but I wouldn't have thought it'd make a huge difference to a 2 leaf plant?
