Spring Barley drill date

We wont even consider drilling it until at least the second week in April or until the ground is warm enough,
you real need to put it in and its up in five days and never looks back, we drilled some beginning of March a few years back
almost a ton difference in yield to the April drilled and we have drilled as late as first week of May and got 3 tons acre.
Plenty of time yet as i said the ground needs to be warm.

I have drilled in May before. Apart from harvest maybe being a little later, the only other thing to look out for is BYDV. The crop is most susceptible at the 1-2 leaf stage, and normally in May the weather is warm enough for aphid migrations, so if the two coincide, it can be a major problem (esp. if you haven't applied insecticide or suitable seed treatment)

And we are off 80% good going , rest is natural springs quite tender neighbour wanted it in more mud than dust . Another nice long field though 738 m long

you can seriously go off people , had a big hail storm here this pm, ground wetter than any time this winter now

Never thought about this problem before. However cuckoo barley a big no no round here......

Previous owner of this place used to sow spring barley after early potatoes. Not sure whether it was a success, or not.
Climate has obviously changed in the last 40 years.....

In 2013 when we had a cold late spring mid April or later barley was still worth growing very low input requirement hardly any weeds or disease
All land needs a crop to keep the soil right bare land fallow is the worst option for the soil

Having just paid the rent, and already ploughed the ground, the stuff is going to be planted be it March, April or May.

Looks like most people won’t be drilling until April at the earliest with this kind of regular moisture top-up being forecast. Especially with this weekend’s snow on its way.

Anyone with spare drilling output could make a few £ this Spring.

Looking in my diary this morning, I was nearly wrapped up with barley drilling this time last year.

If we were only getting a few mm like that chart and some sunshine I think it would be fine. Had 45mm this week and only 2 days of sun (tues/wed) was 5 deg yesterday and 5 today with cloud at 250m that's the killer

I’ve had barley in 3 w (just before the snow)
Its chitted with a small root but no shoot.

Most seed is still in the bag which is probably a better place for it !

Stuff in the ground will be fine. I would rather have mine in than not

Started today on 10ha of very light ground. Heavy stuff is getting better but odd bits of rain is making 2 steps forward one back all the time.

My lightest driest field for spring cropping is going in beet but I would rather do the barley first...........

Going again today this gravel is like a desert now got dust apart from the natural springs , go from dust to bog across field and the new yoke pulling down the ex beet land , would not think 3 weeks ago making two foot deep ruts lifting beet , another week of this drying wind it will want a drink @Captain Slack we are in your nightmare field

Ffs. Walked a few hundred acres of my dry ground today, and had to reverse out of several bits Spring barley ground still has standing water.
