We give all new calvers a bucket electro lights drink vet says if they dont take to it should pump it we also pump alot of mastitis cows and sick cows lowered our medicine use dramatically never killed a cow in 3 generations as long as it's done correctly should be no problems usa pump everything as a matter of protocol not going that far prefer free choice but if you stomach tube a new born calf at birth how is it any different for mum

I can't show you hard evidence, but I have spoken to many who have said tubing calves as a matter of course increased issues later on with scours and respiratory problems, over suckling colostrum from dam or teat feeder
I've been there and done it with the fresh cow drinks, honestly can't say I've seen any difference when not used other than financially better off

spent a couple of years tubing every calf after vet persuaded me to do it, gone back to bottle feeding now and found calves have fewer problems

Bringing the thread back on track. Which is the best pump. We don’t have once and we really should for that sick cow or that hard calving we occasionally get. If nothing else I want to further cut our reliance on antibiotics.

Might be worth asking the vet.

Cow would have to be properly ill before most would consider pumping it?

Was told year and years ago by proper old cow man that a bucket of warm water with electrolytes in it is normally enough to tempt a cow that has had a hard time calving.

To be helpful we use a skelet pump for sick cows, it’s plastic not stainless like many of the vets have. We’ve probably had it 3 or 4 years I’ve found it very easy to use and feel it kind to the cow and safe to use

I reckon that is the one my wife has. That stainless steel thingy version struck me as a bit much- probably doubles as an anti-intruder device it is so heavy.
