To all those involved in the Sugar Beet industry, I would appreciate approximately 15 minutes of your time to answer the below survey for my dissertation project titled: ‘Does sugar beet fit into a regenerative agricultural future with a focus on striving for net-zero?’.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch.

It says the page doesn’t exist when I click on it. Not a good start.
If sugar beet is regenerative I’ll eat my hat in Rasen market place.
Harvesting damage to the soil generally wipes out any kind of regeneration in my experience. I’ve seen water filled ruts you could lose a small car in and can’t see that improving with wetter autumns. I’ve actually used the front of my harvester to push a ten tonne trailer out of a hole before now. It’s the sort of stuff that gives soil scientists nightmares. But I’m not actually against the crop. You just don’t make an omelette without breaking eggs and it’s probably one of the best crops for ground nesting birds if you lay off the mechanical weeding and don’t have scorched earth herbicide policy.

I have tried direct drilling beet and it’s great till the autumn when all that love and care and that warm fuzzy feeling goes under the harvesters wheels. Some land stands it better than others of course. Dryer free draining land carries the harvesting traffic better than clart.,
Is it net zero? Well that depends how you look at it. But there’s a fair amount of fossil fuel energy used throughout the processes of growing and refining and I’ve never seen much sequestration though no doubt BS could give you their spin on that. Maybe contact the knowledgeable chaps and chapesses at BBRO who have a wealth of information on this kind of thing whatever it is.
