The Pallet Business

Aye up,

Not sure this belongs here, but unsure where else!!

How does it work?

I know that coloured pallets belong to companies, especially the blue ones that belong to Chep.

I know that the end user is responsible for loading them up when Chep want to collect.

I’m kind of wondering (very long story short) if Chep think there should be, say, 50 pallets here but there are only 40, are we liable for the shortfall?

Or does it work the other way, and we just advise them how many we have?

I’m asking here to avoid the inevitable hassle of phoning the call centre…………. In Portugal!

Cheers, Pete.

Pete my experience of them in the past was that they do not have a clue where they are relying on the honesty of customers and praying that they get as many as possible back, before November the fifth.
We did once many years ago have a man call in the yard and ask for the boss, as no one else was about , I owned up .
he then told me in a very officious voice that in the heap of pallets at the top of the yard were 3 belonging to his company and what was I doing with them.
I explained very politely that I had no clue where they had come from, probably under some Fert bags but I was very happy for him to take them away
He declined but said he would send a lorry within a week. Never saw it and they probably ended up under a Guy. Later I heard he had visited many farmers in the area and several were slightly ;) less polite than myself.

We have recently taken over a feed store and there are hundreds of different coloured pallets here from various companies.

The Chep rep has been in the store this morning but I didn’t get to see him.

The previous store owner has told them there are a certain amount but I don’t know how many. He’s a bit tricky so I just want to know how the land lies and are we liable for any costs should he not be entirely straight with Chep.

I’ve told them in the past that we would leave them outside for whenever they want to collect but wouldn’t be able to guarantee that the transit driving pallet collectors wouldn’t get to them first. If they want them locked inside then they would need to rent pallet spaces for them.
I think it’s only the blue chip companies who will keep a record of the blue and red pallet movements so if you’ve never signed to accept them I wouldn’t worry as they won’t have a clue how many, if any, you have.
I get a nice bit of beer money from selling surplus pallets to a dealer, obviously not the blue or red ones….

Seen a few red ones before. Are they a different company?

Ah that's useful, we have at least 1 blue one here in good condition, knew it belonged to someone, haven't a clue what was on it when it came. We mainly get plain ones and end up getting shot of them via facebook to anyone who will take them.

Be careful. Suppliers using pallets like chep normally have in there terms and conditions a clause whereby the purchaser is reponsible for any losses. Supplier declares to the like of chep number of pallets supplied to purchaser and address. Chep declare how many received from the declared purchaser address any difference is invoiced to supplier who bills the purchaser.

Sorry Pete, this won't be any help to you, but we had the blue pallet man called one day, and saw a couple in our yard (I can't honestly remember where they came from).

Anyway, he wanted to charge us. Don't know if they had a genuine ability to do so, or if they were just chancing their arm for a quick ££. Forget how much they wanted, but we said we didn't ask for the pallets, and we would charger them for blue pallet storage. Our charger was the same as theirs
