Tick Borne Fever

Has anyone ever had an outbreak of Tick Borne Fever in dairy cows?

A quick rundown on our case:

On the 20th of April, I had six first calvers with no milk and high temperatures. I immediately suspected IBR so the vet recommended that we vaccinate. Symptoms cleared up and heifers came back on 70% of their milk.

Moving on to the 20th of May, another batch of first and second calvers came in with high temp and no milk. We treated with Betamox and Dexametasone as temp were very slow coming down. The vet took dung and blood samples but before we got results two cows were passing blood and subsequently died. The remaining affected cows were much more severely affected than the last bunch. This is when test results came back showing Tick Borne Fever.

We are now in our third bout of it with roughly 10% of the herd affected. Oxtet works well but obviously it is not a long term solution. We have traced it to one area of the farm which, up to now, we have never had any problem with but it is bordering a wooded area.

We are spring calving, grazing from February to November. We can not really afford not to graze this area and it is not suitable for cutting. It is grazed bare and tight everytime. Has anyone had experience with this before and have any solution. AFAIK there is no available vaccine.

Thanks for reading and any help.

I’m just going from memory but although Spot on is listed for keeping ticks off of sheep and used more commonly for flies on cattle, I have found it definitely works just as well for cattle. Perhaps you could fly dress them 😉 before they go out to the high risk field.

If it’s possible, try to expose the younger heifers to it as they don’t get affected by it and develop an immunity.

Imizol is the product we have used to save cows but with 21 day milk withhold and 213 day meat withdrawal it’s not something you would want to use any more than absolutely necessary!

Would try anything at this stage. As An aside we used to graze breeding heifers on part of this block until 2021 so this is the 1st year they havn't been exposed. But we never had a single case til this year. Might do them with spot on before they go back. Imizol sounds like a serious drug. Thanks for advice

Get some sheep in to graze it, get them well treated with Crovect, Clik or whatever is best and let them mop up the ticks and kill them off. That’s why there’s so many sheep on the grouse moors up here - to help keep numbers down for the birds.

Oh and if you have deer running in and out of the woods, they are probably not helping the situation.
Yes we have deer as well. The reason we moved breeding heifers was deer in with them and during night and then TB. Thought it better to graze cows there during the day only thus eliminating that problem. 1 solution leads to another problem

Have no sheep and fencing is only 1 strand of electric unfortunately.

Sadly it’s advice based on experience. If the cows are peeing out blood then they are already in a really bad way. Imizol has saved a cow for me within the last 10 days. She’s already 75% back on her milk and looking a lot brighter now thankfully.

The best tactic I can advise for the deer is a deer stalker!

It was passing blood through dung with us. Almost pure blood. From what your saying our problem stems from the fact we moved heifers away from this block and they now have no immunity at all. They used to spend all there 2nd year here for breeding and we never had 1 sick with the virus. They're now completely naive to virus. Is it contagious or does each cow have to be infected by a tick individually?

I think it's similar but wouldn't know enough about it. I've never seen red water but always assumed it was in strong poorly grazed pasture. We graze tight every 3 weeks do clean grass everytime

Again from memory, its not contagious. It’s from a small organism (Barbesia?)carried in the saliva of the tick and the cow becomes infected when it bites into the skin. Thankfully not all ticks carry it and it seems to be quite area dependent.

I found spot on to work very well. It needs to be applied every month or so..Similar to you I also got red water cases. I haven't had a case of either in a couple of years. At its height I maybe six cows treated with non with hold antibiotic for fever and some. red water cases needing imuzol.I well remember the first fourteen cows in a row all repeating before spot on kicked in.All this with only 50 cows
