tractor snobbery

I’m not a big fan of the grassmen stuff (and Jesus Christ why doesn’t that chap stop eating) but they are keen on their classics with the 1455 and 4955 etc so it’s not all just about new stuff.
I do agree with most of what you said though
I agree to a point.
Grass men do look at older items, but they are some restored hens teeth model.
They almost make that exception so that they can drive an older tractor for a day, or see what it can do, but the focus is mainly on the impressive fleet, Volvo vs JCB, Stewart vs K-two or some other unaffordable item, or how many minutes to fill a trailer.

But it sells, and that's what they are in the business of, so who can blame them, most of it is filling a young lads head with bollox.

If you had the Grassmen youtube / video income to hide from the taxman you'd invest in the unusual older stuff rather than shiney, depreciating monsters.

Yes went to look at a new tractor neighbour had on demo every one’s looking in the cab and trying the seat out I was looking at the mechanical bits front axle suspension /hydraulics and the like . So when every one had had a drive it was my turn ohell a great big telly screen and a control lever with every button and switch known to man I just got back off and said not bloody likley.

I don't get the reticence to drive newer gear, I really don't. It's like electric spools. After sitting in the thing for 5 days straight suddenly being able to open the door on a dungspreader or tip a trailer up with a switch is ideal. Who wants to pull a lever which means sitting in the seat like a sack of spuds all day?

Next time you see someone in a John Deere on the road, follow them and watch how they are sat in the seat, like a freak from Cornwall with one shoulder larger and more forward than the other? Spine like the leaning tower of pizza by the time he is 60.

just remember that the older you get the less likely you are to put up with sh!t, (people or machinery.) i heard the other day that the new golf course being built at stonehaven is looking for tractor drivers for site work.£18/hr is the rumour. anyone confirm?
Rubbish. I know someone driving a tractor there who also works for us 2 days a week.

A lot of the folks with new tractors, don't and never will actually own them, they are just a hamster on a wheel.

A lot of tractor drivers heads are full of sh1te these days, particularly the younger ones who get a semi when the see the grass men logo.
Social media etc. is guilty of making folks think that everything should be big and new and it's is allowing the rise of a generation of air-heads who have no cost awareness, and fail to realise that tractors are only a means to an end.
Too be perfectly honest as long as a tractor earns more that it costs you that’s fair enough. I like new machines so I’m quite happy to pay the money. Part of the attraction of farming for me is running the best machines I can afford. I mentioned somewhere else the only thing new my Dad bought was a cement mixer and as long as more money comes in than goes out I’ll buy what I need ( want). I like looking around the yard and thinking this is mine or it will be.

Two things:

1. Did you actually write that yourself?

2. I’m not seeing how many extra points New Hollands get?

I get 30! After all there's always a POSSIBILITY of getting to do something! It also possible that I will buy a Fendt but not likely!

I'm told that arm/shoulder 'feature' is a throwback from the days when Cornish folk all picked daffodils all summer, the slightly larger shoulder/longer arm on one side gave them enhanced grip and reach with a hand that was closer to the ground and so aided them in the annual daffodil harvest each year.

Don’t really get what you’re saying what does a sack of spuds sit like .I just mean I don’t like one hand permanently on one big lever not knowing which button to press I can grab a mechanical spool lever in the dark and know I’ve got the right one ( keep my eyes on the road so to speak)I like to move about a bit I seize up . I thought all the young guns wanted John deeres what’s with the bent spine

Next time you are on the road behind a tractor, look at how the driver is sitting. Because of how the controls are orientated a lot of them will be sat a bit crumped over the right. I used to do it too.

Yes got you now I’ve padded up the arm rest on the forager so I can sit straight but keep my elbow on the arm rest saves the leaning tower of pizza bit ( saves backache)

My late Dad always had back trouble & osteopath said it was from constantly leaning over right shoulder (& this is years ago)
Their suggestion was to watch the 9 (or 10) O'Clock news with your back to the TV but look over your left shoulder.

Then he went to a chiropractor who said that his back problems were caused by lifting heavyweights in his teens before he had finished growing.

I believe the chiropractor because he spent more time milking than in a tractor seat !

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
