Vegan bought a farm in Scottish Highlands to grow a NUT tree forest

I think they might be disappointed if they expect hazel in the Highlands to produce the sort of Cob nuts we get (or got) in our Christmas stockings. Newly planted wild-hazel take about 10 years to start producing nuts in any quantity, and there is a big variation form year to year.

Even in a good year, the nuts usually fail to produce a kernel worth risking your teeth trying to crack them. And when you resort to using a handy stone, the best you can hope for is a mushy crushed kernel. But I suppose, there will be a bit of local demand from stick dressers.

Having said that, nobody should go through life without tasting the remnants of the green bracts when you are young enough to persevere cracking them with your teeth.

Good luck to them. At least they have put their money where their mouth is this time not just trying to tell us how to do it because they know best.
I do think they have just accidentally started a squirrel sanctuary though and won't see any nuts themselves :ROFLMAO:
Just had to recheck my dates as for a minute I thought I'd been unconscious for a while and it's before midday on the first of April

The Croft is well up north, around 70 acres with extra grazing rights. £18 if you want to sponsor a tree. 65 had by last night. She mentions overgrazing by sheep and having to restore the soil fertility, neither of which should have been a problem in Sutherland. The photos show pretty wild countryside. Looking for money to restore barns, etc.
Good luck if they can make a living but the time to see a return may finish them.

They are currently trying to make a living by, effectively, begging.
