Veterinary Student looking for Pig Placement *last min*

Hi there,

I was recently let down by a pig farm where I had a 10 day placement booked for the end of August and beginning of September. I am now struggling to find a placement at such sort notice 29th August - 7th September. I am based in Buckinghamshire, but have my own car and I am willing to travel if accommodation is provided (don't need anything fancy, I'm used to working lambing seasons in a cold caravan!). Getting a little desperate now as I need to hit a certain number of weeks of experience before the end of the year. If anyone has any contacts I am happy to send a formal application over with cv and references etc. Thank you in advance!!!

Hope to hear from you soon,
Caroline

Working in the USA on a pig unit would be a hugely useful experience for a vet student I would think. If I had the chance to work in a US hospital I would jump at it.
Chances are the OP will never touch a pig in her career.

To the OP don’t be offended if they ask you to leave your phone in the staff room during the day when you are there.

Travel and working abroad certainly give a young person great life lessons. the Hutterite colonies are the top pig producers here both for genetics and technology for healthy production.

Hi there, I'm very interested in farm medicine and have certainly encountered pigs whilst undertaking previous placements and paid roles. I'm keen to increase my knowledge, and I'm not afraid of hard work or long hours. Thankfully I'm not tied to my phone as some people are, and have numerous references that attest to my work ethic!

If you had a longer placement it may be possible to work off the costs involved in the travel. The hog industry is very under staffed as a rule. Lots of workers come from south east Asia to work in hog barns and send the money home. And with a veterinarian background it would be a bonus.

Be a good way to earn some dollar for the Uni. I worked every summer my first time around and didn't really owe much money come the end of the course.

Problem is vet students don't really get much of a summer as they have to fill much of it with placements. Needs to be in a wide variety of disciplines too.

It really is a balancing act! I have to complete 12 weeks of various different placements (Lambing, dairy, equine, pig/poultry etc.) two weeks (10-days) at a time within 2 years, but the only time I have available to undertake these is during my summer and easter holidays. These are all unpaid, so the rest of my time is filled with earning money to pay for my degree as well as caring duties for an unwell family member. I was lucky enough to go to South Africa for a placement during my gap year and would love to travel more, but unfortunately I have too many responsibilities and commitments to do this at the moment. However, I do manage to hold down three jobs, so doing the best I can with fitting placements in around these. It's a tough course to be studying!!

Yes, you have my every sympathy, having to organise your own placements is a bit pants.

Glad you got sorted

Yes it is a tough course to get in to , a tough course to fund and challenging to find placements

My Niece is in her 3rd year at RVC.

I think we all still worry about the stats for long term commitment within the large animal sector
