Vicon disc mower

I have a vicon dmp 2800 non conditioner disc mower. Bought for topping grass in front of cattle. It’s leaving bits uncut in really light grass. Anyone ever come across this and have an answer for it. I’ve tried altering forward speed and pto speed with no difference at all. It’ll even leave dock stems uncut. I’ve cut heavier stuff at times for the baler and it’ll cut it perfect.

Presumably blades are sharp. How low are you cutting? If top link to long it can push down rather than cut. I’m told topping skids can help with a shorter top link but never tried it myself

The skirts dont help cutting light stuff at all.
The skirt at the front simply and understandably pushes the light flippy stuff over spoilling the the efficiency of the cut and all of the skirt including and particularly the rear as well traps or alters the wind 'vortex ' created and blows light grass seed stems over around causing them to not be cut well.
Also in the lighter amount or even short length mowing scenario' debris of cut grass can build up behind or in front of the bed not helping.
Make suitable adjustment to the above and they will do a pretty good job, darn sight better and more efficiently than a topper.
In my experience .

Edit , I even managed to get one to make a reasonable job in crested dogstail 'aka wire grass' .......run to a seed head...:banghead::rolleyes:

Yes blades are sharp. I’m cutting fairly low so should be able to cut it. I had a Kuhn for years with two bales per disc and it would cut everything perfect.

I did try a bit with the front cover up and it was perfect. I’m not sure is it the skirt is too long or the vortex created by 3 blades per disc is the problem. I’ve had a disc mower for years and wouldn’t even dream about a topper. Disaster of a yoke

Have you got the angle set on the top link right?
Are you setting the rpm at proper speed. Is it in eco mode etc If they are run below rpm they do leave a little here and there. The triple blades are the best design by far, very rarely do they leave grass,
Check they are the right blades. They should be cranked.

I’m setting the cutting height with the top link. Tried all pto speeds and none make any difference. I’ve been using mowers for 20 years for topping and silage and never had any bother like this. All 2 blade types too. Blades are cranked type too.

Every thing seems right from what you've said,

Have you changed the blades of late? Did have a customer who put the opposite handed blade on and it cut a very oddly as it does have a lift effect or drop in the case of reversing them accidently.

No only bought it last year and blades are on right way. Checked that first??.

our vicon used to do it.never cured it
Hmm. Not what I wanted to hear but I did think that would be the case. It’s a bit disappointing to move to a newer machine and find it does a lesser job than older machine but I suppose that’s the way a lot of machinery is going.

Would be a problem of all mowers with light dry grass some worse than others, I always put it down to the amount of draught they create blowing the grass away from the blades, tho I'm basing that on mow co's rather than straight mowers.
I assume the Vicon has the 3 blades per disc? would say that would be worse in this instance, as creating more draught & with 3 there is less time/room to get inbetween the blades.
