Wanted: Out of parlour feeders

So I can feed a blend and a cake, everything can have blend in the parlour and then high yeilders can have cake through the oopf. Should save me a small fortune with time.

Alternatively I can feed everything the blend in the feed passage but that will take time and I cnat think of a good time to feed it. If i feed it this way after milking the cows will have to wait around rather than get straight out to fresh grass, alternatively if I feed it before milking I reckon they'll become lazy and not bother to flow through the parlour nicely.

why don’t you just carry on with the current system.
Because cake is £300/t and blend is £180/t, and I need as much milk as I can reasonably get which means feeding plenty of concentrates. Heifers and lower yielding cows will be fine with grass and a blend, higher yielding cows will appreciate a cake on top. I'm happy to give them it if they'll provide me with the extra litres.

Shouldn’t be that much difference between cake and blend for like for like?
are the extra litres really that profitable? Well managed grass is a great feed and a fraction of the cost
It wouldnt be like for like to be fair, but that's kind of the point. The lower yielders could fill up on grass and have a bit of cheap blend to help keep litres up and like said on here previously it's cheap acres. The higher yielders can still have the cheap blend but have cake to top them up and fulfill what they're capable of doing. Some are 10,000 litre cows, they need a bit of extra help to fulfill that in comparison to a 5000 litre heifer which can manage off grass and blend

For my summer contract it was cake at £250 or blend at £230. The blend was marginally better ingredients but there wasn't a lot in it.

you are worse than me for wanting to spend money ;) , but before you do if you are trying to maximise your output from forage you will find that once you start giving extra treats those cows will get lazy and will always be hammering those feeders to get that extra nut and not thinking about going to graze.

you need a lot of them to access when in for milking..................., and a slow parlour!
Just wondering if it’ll be a bit
Of a scrum if they’re all trying to get in at once and if they’ll be keen after they’ve just had blend.
