Watch out for adders

Just a warning for you all

They're out and about and they're hungry and cranky due to the weather.

I was chased this morning and I had a cow bitten 2 weeks ago - she's alive but lost nearly all her milk, teats have gone black and skin is peeling in areas but is OK in herself luckily

just go careful working in ditches, turning ovr over rocks, sheet metal etc - basically anything that will be warmed up by the sun

I was wondering if it might have been a photo-sensitive reaction to something else rather than a snake bite.
But anything would be perfectly safe being photo-sensitive so far this year!

A friend lost their dog to an Adder bite last year.

Sad to hear. I was just about to post that I had seen an adder warning posted up yesterday on social media, from my old patch in Wyre Forest and it included the 'watch your dogs' message - this would include farm dogs which of course are hardly ever on a lead when out and about the farm.

I lost my dog that I had since I was a boy to one a few years ago, she was my first ever dog, heartbroken at the time

I lost my favourite heifer a few years ago as well

Dad had a cow bitten last year, she recovered but was never right again but he did manage to get her up a lorry

Dad was bitten last year and wasn't very well

My current collie was bitten 2 years ago and nearly died

Now I've had this cow as well

Hate the bloody things 🤦‍♂️

There's no reason for anyone to lose an animal to an adder bite. My wife regularly treated dogs, horses and cows to puff adder bites however it does take a lot of work.

Was really sad, a lovely little Cocker. In some local woods running around doing what cockers do, must have disturbed an adder just waking up and got a bite. Was in the vets within half an hour an died there soon after. ☹️

Could you explain more? Genuinely interested!
Adder venom is cytotoxic. Which causes necrosis of tissue. Basically the area around the bite just rots away if it isn't treated. I think it's the secondary infection that kills. If I think it's just a case of cleaning and removing the damaged tissue but it's a lot of work. I remember one dog that ended up with a big hole in its neck because my wife had to keep cutting bits of dead stuff away. The problem with larger animals is that it's usually a while after they are bitten that it's noticed so it's too late for anti-venom even if you had any.

Is there certain parts of country that are more populated with Adders than others

Never seen one here thankfully.

Think it’s not just geographical area, but also local conditions. Lots of adders 20 miles away on Dartmoor.
