Winter tyres are the best thing since sliced bread. Leave them on all year round.

bet some of these folks wished they had them

Winter tires don't do that well at summer though, as they're not made for warm weather. The rubber will go soft and start to "roll" when driving through bends etc. They turn slippery and have poor grip on watery roads.

Needless to say, in Finland we have two sets of tyres (winter and summer) since there isn't a tyre that can handle our temperatures, ranging from ~+35°C to ~-40°C. I run winter tyres from ~October to late April or early May.

Folk absolutely insisting on using the roads in the recent weather 'because I have winter tyres on'??

I've never bought the fudging things and the only problem I have ever had on snow is finding my route blocked by other vehicles that were on their roof or stuck in hedges etc.

Generally of the opinion that work can wait whilst my safety is a priority.
That's nice for you but some people have to drive for work on rural roads and their work can't wait, me included. If you've never used winter/cold season tyres driving around snowed-in lanes all day then how do you know whether they're any good or not?

Anyhow, I'm one of those awful people 'absolutely insisting on using the roads in the recent weather'. I use my 4x4 (not my normal work vehicle) and I carry a shovel, salt, tow rope, jump leads, anti-freeze and spare rubber floor mats to assist people who're blocking my way. You might want to sit down now before your head blows off because I also have all-season tyres on the car and I love 'em.

For anyone thinking about what all-season tyres to fit, I can highly recommend these:

Vredestein Quatrac 5 tyres

Some Quatrac 5 reviews

I've used them for at least ten years, buying the newest version each time I need new tyres and the only downside I find is a little more road-noise. They've been well-tested in all weather, bashed through snowy lanes during Eastern Beast events, driven on muddy field-tracks, and kept me safe on sodden motorways. 10/10, 5 stars, will buy again.

Why so defensive? Did I just insult your manhood or something?

I've driven on rural roads for years, it's not the Swedish rally you know. I've only ever been stopped by snow where cars or other vehicles are blocking the roads. I too would use winter tyres if I lived in Scandinavia or the like as its a lot more serious there.

If the authorities are advising people avoid non-essential travel, then I would avoid non-essential travel, as I am well aware of the propensity of morons to pish about on the roads in such weather when they have zippo experience of driving in such conditions.

All season tyres... wow. Some amazing secret no one knows about. Thank you for that.

Defensive? Manhood?? 😘

😄

I've also lived in rural back-woods Sweden which is where I learnt to love the winter tyre. And that stopping to help your fellow motorist in extremis (moron or not), by dragging them out of the hedge or on to more level ground is a Good Thing for all concerned trying to get about in shitty road conditions. The only way people get experience of driving in grotty weather is to do it and hopefully learn from it, but it's unfortunate that we don't get enough snow on a regular basis.

You're very welcome to my recommendation, no need for thanks. Not all winter tyres are equal and I figured my experience might be appreciated by people reading along and pondering which tyres would do the job best, that's all.

Most Modern cars are useless in snow
Always used to get up hart side in the snow with cheap hatchbacks (106s corsaBs ect) while messing around in my youth

took my girlfriends Audi Q3 out in the snow the other week thinking it would be good and it was useless wide tyres to much weight and a ABS system that won’t let you stop if it’s icey Fecking glad I’ve a pickup to take her to work in when it’s bad weather

A lot of cars are pretty heavy now and numb in the steering so you have less seat-of-the-pants sensation when something is sliding. Electronics can be problematic because many are over-cautious and cut engine power if they sense the slightest bit of slip. Some cars seem to have a different points of balance compared to others, too. Both our Volvos are pretty dull on snow and won't misbehave at either end no matter how much I tried and this is on regular (but not stupidly low profile) rubber.

Quick funny story when we were kids we would push cars out the village for some pocket money one day we come across lady stuck in her car we offered to help but she wouldn’t pay us, so we stood there and watched and waiting.she was out with the salt putting it under the rear wheels of the car we stood there laughing what are you laughing at ,you supposed to put the salt over the front wheels she replied I can get the front ones to go round and the back ones are not moving🤣she was driving Austin 1100 .

There’s an old polish guy works here. to get to work there’s a steep brae that comes off a junction so you can’t get a run at it. in frosty weather he just bangs the car in first, foot to the floor, and melts his way up 🤣👍. I’ve got a picture somewhere...
