what should it cost to hire scaffolding?

I like this, and then make into gates each time you think you've finished.

Did any of the trades take the huff about ascending amateur-assembled scaff?
Not in the least, they assemble it themselves.
The perplexing thing is while the joiner is happy to build and work on it 3 courses up, he won’t move a light switch 4 inches along a plasterboard wall, because he says it’s dangerous.

Bit late with this suggestion but I bought my own about 10 years ago, and it paid for itself on the first year. Having said that the planned farmhouse restorations grew arms and legs and became a monumental money pit, but that’s part the deal of living in an old house.
I think you have lost the point about scaffold and scaffolders, you employ the scaffolders for a very simple reason , it covers your back if something goes wrong.
I would happily buy and use scaffold, if I was the only one going up there, but as soon as someone else steps foot on it, you are taking a huge risk, un less you have the correct tickets, despite my joke about the qualifications required

If anything went wrong you won’t see the scaffolders for dust.

I get the feeling that I really need to set up a roofing / scaffolding / drive tarmac laying business that isnt in any way dubious. Would turn up, give quote, do job properly, and bill quoted amount. Who knows, it might catch on.
While your at it, train as a plumber, who operates in the same way....

That's fine if you're the kind of guy that's scared of his own shadow. But having worked with these guys for 10 years, both they and I are happy that they can demonstrate competence in their design and safe use of scaffolding.
