What size steel to replace a pillar ?

Have a shed here 100ft x 40 ft . 20ft bays shed is made of 8x5 pillars and roof trusses. Looking to remove 1 pillar to give 40ft clear access . Have had 2 lads get back to me with steel sizes and both different 🤔. One recommends 254 x 146 the other with 305 x 165 . First lad says the big size steel is over kill and not needed . Opinions appreciated.

When have you built something and then said to yourself "I wish I had skimped a bit on materials, I'm sure we will never get extreme weather"

personally I don’t think the 254 is big enough

Imagine there won’t be a massive difference in price between 2 for what you are doing so would take the bigger section.

Always gives an allowance for corrosion which is never a bad thing.

You get guys that are adamant that their steel sizes are fine but things move on and accepted sizes change.

Both to small to do a proper job and braces will need adding to stop middle frame deflecting beam outwards

if i was doing it i would put 2 new posts to hold the beam. as you said the raffters are trusses so im geussing the shed is quite old.

a customer of mine had plans done by a structual enginer a couple of years ago for a 40x60ft, 20ft bays. with the beam spaning 2 bays. if i remeber corectly the carrier beam was 406x something and the posts holding it up ether end was 254x146x54

My bad what i meant by roof truss is that roof steel is also made from 8x5 steel beam same as pillars
